Emily Salguero Professor Robinson Critical Thinking/Ethics 14 January 2021 Reading Summary: Lesson 1

“What is the Socrative Method?” by Christopher Phillips The Socrative Method (also known as elenchus) comes from the professor at Princeton, Gregory Vlastos. Gregory explains that the Socrative Method never started as a “method”. The Socrative Method was some sort of an escape to the Socrates themselves. With using that method, they were able to find the truth within their “own light.” (Philips) The author continues to say the only way to really bring out the truth to people, is to persistently study our own thoughts, ideas, and viewpoints. The reason for the method was not only to bring out the good and truth within people, but to also completely wipe away any preconceptions and influence they may have. Philips goes on to explaining that the Socrative Method is deeper and more complex than what Vlastos explains it as. In saying that, Vlastos describes the method as a way for people to grasp on common sense or a way for people to find it. Philips describes it as common sense itself. C.D.C Reeve, a professor at Reed College, explains what an elenchus is. An elenchus (in his point of view) isn’t just to reach an accurate representation of a virtue or moral, it is for the humans or the Socrative Method users to truly find happiness and joy through the method. Amongst all the methods out there, Philips differentiates the Socrative Method to the Scientific Method. Unlike the Scientific Method, the Socrative Method induces unimaginable beliefs like love, wellness, and happiness....
