Description

‘In Rear Window Alfred Hitchcock reveals the darker side of human nature.’ Discuss.

In Rear Window Alfred Hitchcock presents to his audience a microcosm of American society in the wake of McCarthyism, reflecting the changing views and values of the post war era. His 1954 film examines the way in which people respond to others, be it in relationships or within a community, in order to critique societal values (background/context of film). The world he depicts within the apartment complex in Greenwich village is one in which individuals often succumb to selfishness and baser human desires regardless of the consequences (contention). In this film, Hitchcock reveals a society in which voyeurism is practised and the privacy of others invaded without consideration of the consequences (argument 1). Also highlighted is the human predisposition to be selfish, to judge others yet not oneself (argument 2). The director also reveals the capacity of individuals to resort to violence as a means to an end (argument 3). Yet, in spite of his examination of reprehensible human behaviour, Hitchcock nevertheless alerts his audience to the finer side of human nature and how individuals can act with decency and integrity. (argument 4).

TOPIC SENTENCES: 1. Hitchcock reveals a society in which voyeurism is practised and the privacy of others compromised without consideration of the consequences (argument 1). (Jeff and voyeurism)

2. Rear Window also highlights the human predisposition to be selfish, to judge others yet not oneself (argument 2). (Relationship of Jeff and Lisa) 3. Hitchcock warns of resorting to violence as a means to control others within relationships (argument 3). (Murder of Mrs Thorwald and violence towards Miss Lonelyheart)

4. Yet in spite of Hitchcock’s warnings concerning the need to control the darker side of human nature, his film also endorses the human capacity to act in the best interest of others. ( Working together/ experiencing the consequences/ solving the murder) As this topic is a theme topic, the topic sentences are broad…they focus on relevant ideas instead of characters in the actual topic sentence. Discussion of characters follows the topic sentence and is evidence....
