Conflict Resolution 1

Reflection # 2 - Group Roles - Tasks and Maintenance Functions. In a group setting, I overlap into two roles, I am the Initiator and Information Seekers. When I get together with my group I like to get on task and get things going. If my group members become distracted or become unfocused, I keep the group on task by bringing the conversation back together in order to complete the task effectively. I enjoy giving suggestions and ideas. If any problem arises, I will try my best to fix the problem and make sure nobody is affected by the decision or choice that is made. I bring a few skills to the table such as being reliable, having great organizational and communication skills. I do believe these are essential when coming together as a group. An example of this is when some of my group members begin to “branch off” and have their own private conversations I try and bring everyone back together by finding similarity in the goal and their conversations. I am also an Information Seeker. I love asking questions to quiet people. It helps open them up and get them going. Usually, the quiet ones are full of interesting, creative ideas and I love to hear everyone’s ideas. When I am missing out on information I will either go out and find it on my own or ask my group members. An example of this was when our group first came together. Everybody was conversing and getting to know each other but one person in the group since she was very shy. Her quietness caught my attention and I begin to ask her more questions, the more I asked the more she opened up to me and the other group members.

Maintenance Functions

Conflict Resolution 2

I fall under the Gatekeeper Function. I am the person who enjoys inviting new people into the group and making sure everyone is included in the group. I encourage everyone to speak and participate and tell them that there is never a stupid question so don’t be afraid to ask! An example of this is when another member had to join our group. She felt slightly out of place since we all connected, but it didn’t take her long to click and fit in with us. She just needed to break out of her shell. Another function I fall under is Tension Reliever. I can’t function within a group if everybody is being hostile and defensive with each other. If I notice any of these things, I quickly put an end to it by addressing the issue, weighing the possible outcomes and coming to a conclusion. An example of this was in my grade, twelve class. My teacher arranged partners for the class and parred me with someone I have never worked before. They wouldn’t make eye contact with me and would avoid responding to my questions. I had enough and decided to ask her what is going on, she expressed to me that she thought I didn’t like her. This wasn’t true, as we talked a bit more and got to know each other we eventually begin talking frequently and becoming good friends.

Defining The Problem - Excercise 6.6 1. My ex-friend and I were involved in the conflict. 2. The issue was that my “friend” was talking behind my back and sharing my private details around the school. Which resulted in us not being friends anymore. 3. The problem was that a girl who I thought was my friend was talking behind my back and lied and said she never said anything.

Conflict Resolution 3

4. No, my ex-friend defines the situation differently. She believed that since we had a fallout she thought it was okay to share my private business around the school.
