Renaissance Arts in 15th Century Italy Art Styles and Artists  Linear perspective: mathematical depiction of receding space, figures posed to align with the implied lines that would converge at a single point on the horizon line. o Artists:  Paolo Uccello  Niccolo Leading The Charge  The Battle of San Romano  Florence Cathedrals: Large dome roofs over high alters, begun in the late thirteenth century and had continues intermittently during the fourteenth century. Builders envisioned very tall domes to span the huge interior of the crossing, but hey lacked the engineering knowledge to do so. o Artists:  Filippo Brunelleschi  Dome of Florence Cathedral (Santa Maria Del Fiore)  Church of San Lorenzo  Ospedale Degli Innocenti (Foundling Hospital)  Classical Style: Architectural details carved in pietra serna (a grey Tuscan sandstone that became synonymous), Below the plain clerestory, the arches of the mace arcade are carried on tall, slender Corinthian columns made even taller by the insertion of an impost block between the column capital and the springing of the round arches. o Artists:  Attributions to Michelozzo di Bartolomeo  Façade, Palazzo Medici-Riccardi  Courtyard with Sgraffito Decoration, Plazzo Medici-Riccardi  Relief Sculptures: Sculptures made out of bronze or stone, details of cloth, hair, and body showed an artist’s attitude towards realism, space, and time period. o Artists:  Lorenzo Ghiberti  Sacrifice of Isaac  Nanni di Banco  The Four Crowned Martyrs  Donatello  St. George  David  Equestrian Statue of Erasmo Da Narni  Lorenzo Ghiberti  Gates of Paradise (East Baptistery Doors)  Panel of the Gates of Paradise: Jacob and Esau  Renaissance Perspective: linear or mathematical perspective that enabled Italian artists to represent three dimensions on a two-dimensional surface, simulating the recession of space in the visible world that is convincing.
