The concept expanded to New York City, where it evolved into the modern graffiti movement, which excelled in the late 1970s and early 1980s in the United States before spreading to Europe. 2. Chris “Daze” Ellis Born; 1962, New York Nationality; American Art Movement; Street Art Genre; graffiti At the age of 14, Chris "Daze" Ellis attempted to spray-paint his first subway vehicle, but the paint in the can froze due to the cold weather. His future attempts were more successful, and he went on

to paint hundreds of subway cars with partners like John "Crash" Matos for the rest of the decade. By the 1980s, he had established a career in the art world by exhibiting his work in NYC's alternative gallery scene. He now focuses on mural commissions and canvases that he exhibits in galleries and museums around the world. In 1976, while still a student at The High School of Art and Design, he began painting subway carriages in New York City. He is one of the few artists of his generation who has made the leap from the subway to the studio. The seminal "Beyond Words" at the Mudd Club in 1981 was his debut group show. His first solo exhibition was presented at Fashion Moda, a well-known alternative art space in the South Bronx, not long after. The Sammlung Ludwig in Aachen, Germany, purchased the first of numerous paintings for their permanent collection a year later. Where is his favourite place on this planet? My studio. It's a sanctuary that I have created and I feel complete when I'm there. What is the best piece of advice he have ever received? What is the worst? The best advice I have ever received would be to believe in yourself and others will. The worst is "Just wait your turn." If I had waited, nothing would ever have happened for me. It's important to grab the day and run with it....
