review essay on a webpage for ADHD...

Description

1 Kresten Herrera ENG-105 April 20, 2020 Tennille Feldbush ADHD Website Review When reviewing a web page for medical or mental health site there are a set of five criteria that need to be met before the page can be deemed acceptable to the general public. The five criteria are accuracy, authority, objectivity, currency, and coverage. The web page I will be reviewing today is called “What is ADHD” (Ranna Parekh, M.D., M.P.H. July 2017) and it was published by the American Psychiatric Association. The two authors are medical professionals and are deemed to be creditable authors. The criteria I am going to be discussing for this particular essay are the accuracy, objectivity, and currency. According to psychcentral.com the “What is ADHD” web page provides objectivity, credibility and current information about ADHD. In the article “What is ADHD” by Ranna Parekh, fills the accuracy criteria by having creditable authors contribute to the article as well as the ease of contacting the organization and authors of this article. Because the two authors of this particular article are both medical professionals who specialize in childhood and adulthood ADHD many people who read this should feel as if they are deemed to be creditable and trustworthy authors. With adulthood ADHD “many adults with ADHD do not realize they have the disorder. A comprehensive evaluation typically includes a review of past and current symptoms, a medical exam and history, and the use of adult rating scales or checklists. Adults with ADHD are treated with medication, psychotherapy or a combination”. ( Simon V, Czobor P, Bálint S, 204–211, 2009). The author

2 who wrote this is knowledgeable in adult ADHD and how to treat it. The currency of this article is eleven years old however it still has some great and up to date information in it. The objectivity of this article was well outlined and well written. The objectivity of a web page is important because you want to be able to read an article and understand what it is you are reading. If you are looking for information on a particular subject, you want to be able to read the article and see what you are looking for quickly and concisely. With objectivity you are trying to “determine if the page is a mask for advertising; if so, information might be biased”. For the “What is ADHD” (Ranna Parekh, M.D. M.P.H. July 2017) web page you want to look for the goals or objectives of what the author is trying to convey. You want to see how detailed the information is and make sure it is detailed enough for you to get the proper information you need. Also, when looking for objectivity read the opinions of the author if there are any opinions. The objectivity of this particular article is to discuss the signs, symptoms, and treatment of childhood and adulthood ADHD, it also touches base on the root causes of ADHD. Being able to identify the objectivity of the web page is important but the currency of the web page is just as important as well. The currency of a web page is important to know so that way you stay up to date on the most relevant news. You want to make sure you are getting the right information and not outdated information. When looking for the currency you want to check and see “how many dead links are on the page, are the links current or updated regularly, and is the information on the page outdated”? (Kapoun, 522-523, 1998). If there are too many dead links, then that could be an indicator that the page is outdated, and you would need to find a new web page to view. A good way to check the date on a web page is at the bottom of the page there will be a date it was last updated or when it was written. If the article has been written ten years in the past, then it

3 would be counted as outdated, and you should be looking for a new web page. Having a current web page will give you better results and you will have an easier time reviewing and reading and writing about the topic. When you write or read about outdated information you could potentially be giving out false information, under educating yourself and others. Being able to provide updated information is important so that way you are reading about the correct information, and you are not being misled. When looking for the accuracy in a web page you want to be able to identify the authors and make sure they are not only creditable but also if you can contact them if you have questions or concerns about the web page. The objectivity of a web page is also important, you want to be able to identify the object of the web page you want to be able to identify the goals and get detailed information from the web page. In the “What is ADHD” (Ranna Parekh, M.D., M.P.H. July 2017). I touched on the importance of accuracy, objectivity, and currency within the article.
