Description

1 ENG-105 2/10/2021 Virgil Mathes Healthline and ADHD

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder also known as ADHD; is a complicated disease to understand. There is still developing information on the disorder, that it is being studied regularly. “Recent neuroimaging has obtained new information regarding the significance of genome diagnosis of ADHD” (Shaw, P. 2018). For this reason, it is important for resources that are providing information on ADHD to the public; to keep up with the changes and new developments. To refrain from providing false information and losing credibility. In fact, so much is still unknown about the disorder that it can cause many concerns with parents of children who are going through these things. “Genetics play a role in the cause of ADHD, although the true cause is unknown” (Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, 2018). Therefore, web pages such as Healthline, should follow guidelines when posting about diseases and disorders. Healthline provides information on ADHD that pertains a focus on Authority, Accuracy, and Currency. Healthline is a web page that has provided information on many topics such as disorders and diseases. It is found to be a reliable source with their slogan of “posting factual, evidentbased information, that is accurate and current from multiple peer-reviewed sources” (Healthline, 2020). Establishing this credibility and reviewing their postings of ADHD, they effectively establish their authority of being a reliable and sensible source on the topic at hand. They give thorough information on many sub-topics of ADHD such as “what is ADHD, Symptoms, Types,

2 ADHD in Children, ADHD in Adults” (Healthline, 2019). Not only is it providing many different sub-topics on ADHD to give a thorough analysis. It also is deemed credible through side notes of what credible doctors and resources have peer-reviewed their information, and who has written the information. For example, in the right-hand corner of the web page there is a picture of a doctor and their credentials, as well as the author of the article, and when the piece was written and/or updated. “Medically reviewed by Timothy J. Legg, Ph.D., CRNP — Written by Traci Angel on September 5, 2020” (Healthline, 2020). Establishing this credibility and providing details ensures that they meet the need of the public as a trusted source as an expert in the field the article is regarding. Which in term demonstrates the authority written throughout. Healthline has also been successful in establishing the accuracy of their information. Since ADHD is becoming increasingly common in adolescents, it is important to have these details of what to expect and having the knowledge of what ADHD is. Healthline establishes this in the first paragraph of the web page stating that “ADHD is a disorder that causes those suffering to lose focus. They have higher levels of hyperactivity, and function in a way where they are unable to sit still and work on one thing at a time” (Healthline, 2020). Children often have a hard time focusing in general, and many have increased energy. Therefore, being able to identify the signs and symptoms of ADHD can increase the diagnosing ability at a younger age for these adolescents. Especially since “Children from ages of 4-17 are diagnosed with ADHD, established by The American Psychiatric Association (APA)” (Healthline, 2020). Healthline effectively provides this information through the many examples shared of symptoms. Not only are they providing this information, but they also go into details of the many types of ADHD, and even how ADHD and ADD are similar yet different. This demonstrates the extensive research and knowledge the author has on ADHD. Thus, proving that Healthline is meeting the

3 needs of the public by the continued dispense of accurate and credible information in a way that no detail will be left behind and the reader may feel comfortable with this source. In addition to providing accurate information, the web page is successful in the currency of the information they dispense to the public. Since there is so much still unknown about ADHD and in the medical field new information and discoveries occur often; it is important that constant research is done for any source to not be deemed outdated. As mentioned previously, Healthline has a small section with peer-reviewed information and when the article was last updated and, in this case, it was written “on September 5, 2020” (Healthline, 2020). This shows that the doctors and investigators on this site are continuously finding new information. There are additional references to other articles used throughout this Healthline article, that refer to other Healthline articles. Just as this one, the others have the same information except they provide details on their page showing their updated status. It also includes when the peer-reviewer had gone over the information as well. Web pages should follow guidelines to appease the public and to establish effective communication on the topics being discussed. These guidelines should always ensure accurate information is present, the details are in depth, and they should not solely rely on themselves. Healthline ultimately is effective in these tactics to become a reliable source providing crucial information to the public. Healthline’s ability to establish this currency continues to deem the importance of web pages and meeting the criteria of the public when it comes to crucial information they need.
