OVERVIEW This Instructional Material for PHED 10032: Individual/Dual/Combative Sports - JUDO is exclusively prepared and designed for the Physical Education students at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines. The main goal is to provide the students, knowledge on the basic principles and knowledge of more than a century old and globally known martial arts - Judo, physical skills as well as defending oneself when the need arises. The manual is divided into four chapters, as follows: Module 1 focuses on the introduction on how Judo started as a passion for personal development with its overwhelming benefits and values. Module 2 discusses the very important fundamental skills in Judo where students will learn exercises and warm-up activities and basic techniques such as how to fall safely on the ground without hurting oneself. Module 3 presents an overview of different basic throwing techniques while standing and grappling techniques where students learn to play while on the ground as well as learning to defend themselves while lying. Module 4 deals with fundamental skills in defending oneself in a real-life situation.

Learn to analyze the principles of judo. Understand the historical and physical aspects of Judo as well as interpret the tournament simplified rules in playing judo. Classify the various basic techniques in judo. Create and be aware of the natural weapons of the body and how to apply them to effectively defend themselves from sudden attacks. Demonstrate the fundamental skills in Judo and perform with ease the proper falling, physical exercises, throwing techniques, and grappling exercises, as a means of selfdefense in case of emergency. Create a mini-judo tournament event or with the collaborative work of creating a creative judo self-defense kata(form) challenge as a culminating activity. Apply and appreciate the basic principles and skills in Judo and enjoy the essence of Judo in their daily life.

Individual/Dual/Combative Sports - JUDO PHED 10032 TWO ( 2 ) units None This course is designed to introduce the students to the fundamental skills of Judo as one of the Olympic sports and as a means of self-defense in case of emergency. It includes preparatory exercises, safety fall techniques, basic throws, fighting stances, pushing and open hand strikes, hand grips and grabbing, head lock and hammer lock, training, and conditioning of the body through calisthenics, developing force and flexibility. Gearing towards the end of the course, the students should participate in group activity applications, learn vital/vulnerable points of the human body, susceptible to injury for the purpose of defense and appreciate the value of the subject matters with respect to self-discipline and physical development. The final examination as part of the culminating activities will be a participation in the inter-class or in-class mini-judo tournament using the techniques or with the collaborative work of creating a judo self-defense kata(form) challenge as a culminating activity.

Classroom policies: 8

1.

Students are required to attend class regularly and promptly. A student shall be marked absent, if he or she arrives after the 1st 40 minutes of the two(2) hours class. 2. Absences due to illness requires a copy of the doctor’s certification and should be presented at the University Medical Clinic for validation (as stated in PUP Students Handbook) If for other reasons (such as a family emergency), a student should present an excuse letter signed by his parents/guardian with attached photocopy of their ID’s. 3. A student must be responsible for what transpired if he/she missed a class. 4. A student shall be automatically dropped from the class roll, if he or she has accumulated 20% of total class meetings (accumulated 4 meetings absences for an 18 class meetings). 5. Students must wear the prescribed class Judo uniform(judogi) for the duration of Judo class. 6. Students who have questions regarding their grades can directly ask the subject professor for clarification. 7. Students are expected to always act as mature individuals. You are expected to observe usual norms of etiquette, politeness and courtesy to your professors, administrators, and staff. 8. Students exhibiting dysfunctional/poor behavior will be referred to the Guidance and Counseling and Testing Services Office (GCTSO). 9. Eating and drinking (except water), using of cellphones and electronic gadgets (all devices should be turned off or kept in silent mode, charging of cellphones or any electronic gadgets in the classroom are not allowed. 10. Students should always practice academic honestly and integrity.

OVERVIEW This module will provide an overview on how Judo was started by Dr. Jigoro Kano as passion of interest and personal development with its overwhelming benefits and values upon learning it. Where Judo emerged from the different ancient jujutsu masters and their jujutsu schools, its birthed also the mecca of this sport, The Kodokan Judo Institute.

COURSE MATERIALS HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF JUDO The Start of Judo from Jujutsu The first steps of judo are intimately linked with Jigoro Kano's life and personality. The man was born on 28 October 1860, in Mikage, currently the East district of the city of Kobe. This part of Japan is famous for its sake brewing and Kano's family related to this world of brewers. Kobe was also known as one of the Japanese ports open to the world, when most of the country was still inaccessible. This might explain Kano's willingness to learn about the rest of the world. As a boy, Kano was small but being extremely physically gifted, he studied with boys who were older and bigger than him. That's one of the reasons why very early on, he learned how to defend himself, as he was repeatedly bullied and laughed at. In May 1882 Jigoro Kano was inspired by traditional forms of combat to create a method of physical, intellectual, and moral education, which he named judo.
