PURPOSE OF MEDICATION
Expected Pharmacological Action Rifampin is bactericidal as a result of inhibition of protein synthesis
Therapeutic Use Rifampin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic effective for gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. - Rifampin is given in combination with at least one other antituberculosis medication to help prevent antibiotic resistance
Complications dysfunctionDiscoloration of body fluids Hepatotoxicity (jaundice, anorexia, and fatigue) Mild GI discomfort Pseudomembranous colitis

Contraindications/Precautions Use cautiously in clients who have liver dysfunction Nursing Interventions
Interactions
Monitor liver function Administer oral rifampin 1 hr before or 2 hr after meals. Absorption is decreased if given with food
Rifampin accelerates metabolism of warfarin, oral contraceptives, protease inhibitors, and non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTIs) for HIV, resulting in diminished effectiveness Concurrent use with isoniazid and pyrazinamide increases risk of hepatotoxicity - Avoid alcohol consuption
