Rituals In Communities...

Description

Katrina Badree Professor Temes 11/30/17 Paper 3

Rituals play an important part in communities around the world. These rituals are important to have as a community because it brings us together and signifies achievements that we make together. We each do them daily without even being aware of it. There are two types of rituals, religious and status. “Religious rituals are often dramatic versions of stories in the culture’s myth and are of two varieties; veneration rituals, which celebrate or petition a deity and healing rituals which relate to the wellbeing of the individual.” “Status rituals, in comparison, serve to move a community member from one stage of life to the next while reinforcing the culture’s mythology.” (Page 1 Kinds of Rituals). Football, as many other sports do, holds on to certain rituals and traditions that the fans and players aren’t even aware of when they are doing it. Specific rituals in football include the clothing, chanting throughout the stadium, and rivalry. “A basic dictionary definition of “ritual” is “a form for a ceremony or a system of ceremonies,” but rituals possess a deeper meaning and purpose for any culture.” (Page 3 What Does Ritual Have to Do With Mythology?) Super fans of football have a number of rituals that they follow, but wearing a certain piece of clothing or jersey are the most known in and out of the football community. Many fans believe that wearing a football jersey of their favorite team will help their team win that game. Some even go as far as

never washing their jersey just so they don’t “wash of the luck.” This is a symbolic object of rituals for football because of the repetition of it throughout fans across the world, and it also occurs in different sports and activities.

Music in general is found everywhere and is used for more common rituals and rituals that occur on a daily basis. During any football game there are always chants going on around the stadium. Either fans from a team will chant to try and boost their teams confidence or they will chant phrases and comments to lower the other teams confidence. Many believe in the power that words and phrases have when it comes to something they really care about and want to happen. Chanting is a method of rituals that bring people and communities together who believe in the same thing, which in this case would be the same team winning. There are rivalries across many sports, but we mainly know them being in high school or college football games. Rivalries between school sports teams are usually caused by the past and history of the schools and their competition together. This competition bring trophies, titles, and bragging rights for the winner of the game, which is very meaningful to the communities who pit themselves against each other. The concept of rivalry has manifested itself in the sport of football since the beginning of its time. Both religious and status rituals occur in everyday life, throughout activities we do often, and we do not even notice it. They keep our community together and help us unify ourselves. Without rituals we would have no past or traditions. We learn more about a community and how they function and what they believe in by following their traditions

and cultures, whether it be a sport or ceremonies. Through repetition of these rituals in football we carry their symbolic meanings through different places and time....
