Description

I disagree that in the play, Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, the lovers overcome obstacles to finally achieve what they have both always desired, to be together. Fate is the path that leads to the future and cannot be altered no matter the outcome. Even though they were chosen by the stars, from the beginning they were 'death marked', this means that the only way they were able to preserve their love was in the afterlife which no one knows if it really exists and instead of achieving a happy life full of love together, they both kill themselves in an unfortunate ending. While love is a prime factor that leads to Romeo and Juliets tragedy. Romeo and Juliet were responsible for their own physical deaths, but fate played an important role in putting the two lovers in suicidal mindset. One of the main sparks to Romeo and Juliet’s downfall could have been avoided if the Montague’s and Capulet’s did not have a feud and if Romeo and Juliet did not meet. The Montague’s and Capulet’s have been in an ‘ancient grudge’, and this is one of the reasons why Romeo and Juliet were fated to meet.Juliet who was keen on marrying a stranger who she has just met thought that ‘[Her] grave is like to be my wedding bed’. This prediction becomes true when Juliet kills herself. Thus their love was ‘death marked’ from the very beginning. As Romeo and Juliet’s love was a powerful nature, it can only be accepted after death. When the two strangers decided to get married, Friar Lawrence who was to wed them sensed that Romeo and Juliet were ‘Wisely and slow they stumble that run fas’”. Friar Lawrence said this because he believed that it would bring peace upon the families if Romeo and Juliet were to marry. Even though the odds of the two lovers being accepted from feuding families were incredibly slim, it was fate that brought them together. Lord Capulet who would never allow Romeo and Juliet to be married gave Paris his daughter’s hand in marriage. Upset about being in a second marriage, Juliet wonders if ‘Is there no pity in the cloud?’ ,fate is not going easy on her. Juliet discovers Romeo’s ‘ill diving soul’ has died. Before Romeo and Juliet’s death, fate led them into suicidal thoughts. Therefore fate drove the two and their ‘dateless’ love to die. To conclude, fate had already laid their cards down for Romeo and Juliet’s downfall since they were born. ‘Shake the yoke of inauspicious stars’, Romeo mentions this saying that the only way to escape fate itself, is to die. Romeo and Juliet would have lived a peaceful life if they had not been chosen by fate....
