Reading Questions – “The Gospel of Mark”

The following outline of Mark’s Gospel is designed to help you see “the big picture” of Mark:

If you were going to tell the story of Jesus, where would you begin; and how is the beginning of Mark’s Gospel (1:1-15) different from that? If I was going to tell the story of Jesus I would start off by telling his life history, however, Mark skips all of that and the earlier chapters directly recount Jesus’ astonishing deeds of power: exorcisms, healings, stilling a storm, and walking on water.

What does the reader learn about Jesus in Mark 1:1-15 that is not made known to the characters in the narrative? Jesus is the Son of God. The characters in the story know that he is extremely powerful and will be baptized with the holy spirit.

The following outline is given to assist your reading of Mark 1:14—8:21: Reading Mark 1:14—8:21, list three ways/instances where Jesus seems to want to keep his identity as messiah or son of God secretive. 1. The disciples don’t understand the meaning behind the bread. 2. The disciples don’t understand the parables 3. During the storm they don’t recognize Jesus

The following outline is intended to provide you with a guide for reading of Mark 8:22—10:52:

What are the three ways in which the disciples misunderstand or respond negatively to Jesus’s predictions about his suffering (8:31-33; 9:31-34; 10:32-41)? 1. Peter took him to the side to reprimand him 2. They didn’t understand what he was saying, and they were too scared to ask. 3. James and John asked him “Grant us to sit, one at your right and one at your left, in your glory.”

In the Gospel of Mark, what saying(s) does Jesus speak from the cross? Jesus says, “My God, My God, why have you forsaken me? (Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?)” from the cross.

How does the Gospel of Mark end (reading the ending as 16:1-8)?

The woman who comes to anoint Jesus meets an angel, but they are too scared that they keep quiet....
