W4 - Factual Storytelling/ Using Real People Getting the message out ● ●

Word of mouth ○ Not reliable News coverage ○ How does your org get news coverage or appearances of interview/ talk shows? ○ It's not always easy, but having a media spokesperson helps

Using a spokesperson ● ● ● ● ● ●

Task is finding someone an audience will be interested in hearing from Same question faced by producers trying to put together a news show or talk show Will the guest have anything interesting to say Will the guest have a story to tell? Is this a guest we’ve seen too many times? Criteria (Kim Taylor-Galway - CBC news producer says): ○ Are they reliable? ○ Agenda driven? ○ Authentic? ○ Credible? Some orgs/ charities use real celebrities to promote their cause ○ Examples ■ Angelina jolie was the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees ■ Avril Lavigne has supported Amnesty International. ○ Positives: ■ Celebrities draw attention to a charity/ organization (media attention, public attention, sponsor attention, donor attention) ○ Negatives: ■ Busy schedules ■ Celebrities can be unreliable ■ Can be overexposed (we get tired of seeing them) ■ Celebrities can be a bad fit for your demographic group ■ Can be subject to scandals ■ Can be associated with projects that don’t line up with your org’s ideals
