Rear Window S #1 - Characters Task: You are to write a sustained analytical response to the following question: ‘Jeff and Lisa struggle to resolve their relationship issues’. Discuss. Select one of the following interpretations to elaborate: 1. Jeff’s confinement allows him to realise how much he cares for Lisa. 2. Jeff’s confinement, and the emasculation that ensues, is the catalyst for his dissatisfaction with the relationship. 3. Jeff cannot truly appreciate Lisa as he is too consumed by voyeurism. 4. Only after Jeff and Lisa swap traditional gender roles do they find happiness. 5. Lisa succumbs to Jeff’s wants in the relationship, fulfilling the role of the submissive woman.

At the beginning of the film, Director Hitchcock illustrates this by using several close-up camera shots and by using angelic music with Jeff in confinement in the dark and Lisa in the light to show the contrast between the two protagonists (19:40). For example, when Lisa asked Jeff “how’s you love life” and Jeff replied with “not too active” (19:50) therefore showcases that Jeffries is not seemingly interested in in a relationship even though the social norm for men in the 1950s was that a man would be judged as being incomplete without a spouse as there was huge pressure to marry as soon as possible if not they would be emasculated within the community. During the 1950s the traditional roles for American women had evolved from staying home to going out having more employment opportunities. The mismatched lives (27:15-32:02) between LB Jefferies who is career-focused and Lisa who is a very successful model. Director Hitchcock’s use of reverse shot that switches with light and dark between Lisa and Jeff shows the contrast between each other’s lives.

Lisa being described as being privileged, materialistic, and high maintenance whereas Jeffries is a risk-taker, informal, adventurous, and likes voyeurism. “You just have to face it, Lisa, you’re not meant for that kind of a life”, Jeff knows that Lisa would be unable to cope with the life that he leads due to his profession. The dissatisfaction that Jeff has for Lisa is a clear struggle for a relationship due to his confinement to his apartment, Jeff’s unwillingness to commit to a relationship with Lisa, Deprives Jeffs of his male role or identity during the 1950s hence why is a catalyst for his dissatisfaction with the relationship....
