Description

For this assignment, you must violate a norm in a public setting. Make sure you violate a folkway, NOT a more. Describe the norm you violated. Explain what a norm is, and what type of norm you violated (should be a folkway). What do these terms mean? How did people respond. Were there positive or negative sanctions, or some of each? Describe how it made you feel. Would you say you have internalized this norm? Learning Objectives: 1. What are norms? Identify and describe the type of norm that you violated? (3 points) 2. Which type of sanction did you receive? (2 points) 3. Did you internalize this norm? (1 point) Norms are the general expectations for behavior. There are two types of norms, which are called folkways and mores. Mores are serious norms for important activities, having a strong moral imperative and strictly enforced. Folkways are rules governing everyday conduct that are not considered to be morally important, so they are not strictly enforced. During my stay at Stephen F. Austin State University, I encountered a very different environment than the one I was surrounded by. Raised in a suburb of Houston, I was accustomed to diversity and seeing people from all over the world. I learned to appreciate different cultures and had many friends that came from diverse backgrounds. When I moved to Nacogdoches, I realized that the majority of the population was Caucasian, and since I did not do any research on the community of Nacogdoches, I felt out of place. During my computing class, a large group of girls would not stop talking, and this annoyed me very much. I mentioned this incident to my friends while we were eating, and my friends asked me why I didn’t speak up for myself. I stated that I did not want to deal with those girls because I felt like they were privileged since they were Caucasian. My comment was simply a joke, but I thought about it and realized if the people who were instigating disturbance were to be African American, they probably would have gotten dirty looks from the rest of the class. I violated a Folkway, more specifically my social manners, in which I stated a very inappropriate joke. I made this comment in front of other Caucasian people, and none of them even looked up to make a face or cared that about what I said. There were no negative sanctions against me, which were acts to discourage behavior that violate norms. I would not internalize this norm, or in other words I would not make it a habit of making inappropriate jokes in from of other people....
