Description

The four symbols discussed in the chapter are language, dress, horse, and buggy. Language is very important to the Amish community. When Amish converse within their community, typically, German dialect known as Pennsylvania German is used with English used occasionally. Most children grow up learning the dialect until they are sent to Amish school to learn English. Knowing advanced English is usually a sign of doing a lot of business with people outside the community. This dialect keeps the Amish community close knit. Dressing in the Amish community is very descriptive of how old someone is and where they are in life intimately, and even politically. These very specific outfits vary based on occasion, but are always very modest—especially for women. The horse and buggy have become the primary symbol that distinguishes the Amish. The horse also represents a relationship with God. Their type of transportation represents their devotion to their simple lifestyle. All of these symbols represent different aspects of their lives, but all tie back to their devotion to the church and their families. The symbol that is most compelling to me is the dress of the Amish community. The dress is a uniform for the community that unites the community. The specific details are extremely interesting that every last detail including buttons and and size of bonnets. I also believe the dress distinguishes them the most from the modern world when they do enter grocery stores and such. The extremely modest dress also symbolizes their commitment to the Church. Dress within modern society has constantly changing trends. These trends are unpredictable on what they’ll be and how long they'll last. Trends seemingly vary from age, gender, and wealth. The media seems to have a large impact on this. Those with access to the media are influenced by “influencers” by the use of advertisement. The Amish are very different in the sense that they do not have access to media and stay constant to their specific, traditional dress. Their dress does express them, but in a different way than individuals in the modern world.
