Astha 1 Ayushi Astha ENGL015 15110321031 ENGL0801 15 April 2019 Satyajit and The Samaj1 : The Influence of The Brahmo Samaj on Ray's Cinema This paper aims to examine the influence of the philosophies of the Brahmo Samaj on the films of Satyajit Ray, with particular focus on his female characters. Satyajit Ray's family had been heavily involved with the Brahmo Samaj since the 1880s. Satyajit Ray's father, Sukumar Ray was an important figure in the reformist wing of the Brahmo Samaj, and had even written a poem that intended to outline the history of the Brahmo Samaj in a lucid manner for children. At a later point in his life, when he was in a dire need of funds to continue making his debut film Pather Panchali, it was a member of the Brahmo Samaj and the then Chief Minister of West Bengal, B.C. Roy who arranged for state funding so that the movie could be finished. Even today, the official webpage of the Brahmo Samaj men- tions Satyajit Ray under the list "…of the most outstanding Brahmos in the Arts, Sciences and Professional during the turn of the millennium, circa 2000." After establishing his link with the Brahmo Samaj both at an individual as well as a cultural level, I'd like to proceed by analysing Satyajit Ray's involvement with the works of Rabindranath Tagore, who was the most notable member of the Brahmo sect, and whose writ- ing also bore the cultural ramifications of the Bengal Renaissance and of the reforms that the Brahmo Samaj was trying to implement in society, especially women's rights issues such as child marriage and education.
