1. How has learning ASL been different than learning other subjects in school? In your opinion, what makes an ASL student successful?

Asl is diferent than learning other subjects in school because there isn’t any writing, it’s only hand movements. An ASL student that is successful is one that practices the signs a lot, and it helps if you enjoy it.

2. The methods debate that started between L’Épée and Heinicke was an important part of Deaf history. This focused on whether oralism or manualism was the better method for teaching Deaf people how to communicate. Imagine that you had attended the public debate between L’Épée and Heinicke in Zurich. Which “side” would you support? Why?

I would support oralism because oralism is the system of teaching deaf people to communicate by the use of speech and lip-reading rather than sign language and i think that it’s easier than manualism. 3. After the Conference of Milan and the announcement that oral education was superior to manualism, sign language was suppressed. In our modern times, can you think of an idea or philosophy that might be considered suppressed just like sign language was? Why is it being “thrown aside”? Do you think it should become (or return to being) a force in mainstream society?

Not every school forces children to learn another language, especially Spanish. And I think it’s important because so many people in this country speak Spanish and all around the world.

4. Deaf people were not permitted to serve in the military during World War I and II. Do you think this is fair? Can you think of any practical reasons that it might have made sense to forbid Deaf people from serving in this capacity?

I don’t think it is fair, they could do some of the behind-the-scenes stuf, instead of the upfront stuf (shooting). Some of the practical reasons that might have made sense to forbid Deaf people from serving in this capacity is since they are Deaf they won’t be able to hear if someone is coming, or they won’t know if the other side is shooting, this could...
