SCIENCE DAILY NEWS STORY & RESEARCH QUESTION

News Story: https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2020/10/201027092216.htm Research Question: Could Vitamin D (or lack thereof) play a vital role in the fight against COVID-19?

WHY IS THE QUESTION YOU IDENTIFIED IMPORTANT TO YOU AS A MEMBER OF SOCIETY? The primary reason why I chose this question is because of the conspiracy theories as to why COVID-19 may be affecting more people in certain groups than others. This disease has affected me personally, having contracted SARS-COV2 (the virus that causes COVID-19) earlier this year and knowing several people that have died as well. Rather than just blindly believe or repeat the conspiracies, this story provides some interesting research into the topic, allows me to form a conclusion, and even speak with my doctor regarding my health regimen.

HOW DOES FINDING THE ANSWER TO YOUR QUESTION IMPACT OTHERS AROUND YOU. This is an interesting, important question, and one that will aid in determining the course of treatment, possible prevention against COVID19. Changes occur in the immune system associated with age and less than optimal health conditions. These changes are made worse by deficiencies in nutrients such as Vitamin D[1]. By, finding the answer about the role of Vitamin D in the fight against COVID-19, doctors can test levels and make recommendations on dosage so people can have a better chance of preventing or surviving this infection with less severity of symptoms, should there be different ways to treat the illness. Knowledge about the possible effects of Vitamin D in the fight against COVID19 is crucial when it comes to treating the virus as well as understanding that Vitamin levels should be at optimum levels in order to ensure long term recovery.

WHAT IS THE BENEFIT OF STUDYING TOPICS IN THE NATURAL SCIENCES? The process of science is a way of expanding our knowledge about the world around us. Science allows us to shed light on how our world works. The study of natural science promotes and develops the mind for critical thinking. This critical thought is the foundation for analyzing and is useful for many applications in life. Things such as preventative care, mechanical design, or even the democratic process are enhanced because of the ability to rationalize and think critically.

MAJOR DEVELOPMENTS IN THE NATURAL SCIENCES RELATED TO VACCINES

Evidence suggests that the Chinese/Indian cultures employed smallpox variolation in their societies.

1000 A.D.

Edward Jenner used cowpox material to create immunity to smallpox, quickly made the practice widespread.

1796 A.D.

Louis Pasteur’s rabies vaccine was the next to make an impact on human disease.

1885 A.D.

Swedish physician Ivar Wickman suggested that that polio was a contagious disease that could be spread from person to person.

mRNA Vaccines gain FDA approval and are at the forefront of n emerging preventative treatment for COVID19.

1905 A.D.

2020 A.D.

MAJOR DEVELOPMENTS IN SCIENTIFIC THINKING

The Royal Society, the world's oldest national scientific institution, is founded in London. It establishes experimental evidence as the determining factor of truth.

Robert Grosseteste publishes his Aristotelian commentaries, laying out the framework for the proper methods of science.[2]

1637 A.D.

1665 A.D..

1220 1235 A.D..

1650 A.D. Rene Descartes publishes his Discourse on the Method of Rightly Conducting One's Reason and of Seeking Truth in the Sciences, an important work in the development of the natural sciences.

Academic journals are published for the first time, in France and Great Britain [3]

Robert Boyle reveals his scientific methods in his writings. He recommends that a subject be generally researched before detailed experiments are undertaken.

James Lind publishes the first description of a controlled experiment using identical populations with only one variable while studying Scurvy.

1937 A.D..

1675 A.D.. 1665 A.D. Henry Oldenburg pioneers the practice now known as peer reviewing, by sending scientific manuscripts to experts to judge their quality.

The use of mRNA in vaccines is finally realized and used in the fight against COVID-19.

1753 A.D. Harry Gold undertakes the first completed placebo trial.

2020 A.D..

HOW DO DEVELOPMENTS IN THE NATURAL SCIENCES AND SCIENTIFIC THINKING INFORM QUESTIONS ABOUT THE TOPIC IN YOUR NEWS STORY? Now that we have the mRNA vaccine created by Pfizer-Biotech, the question remains one of importance. This is of importance to the natural scientist because it allows the scientist to use the evidence presented to test, reproduce, and validate the study. As the scientific thought changes, information should be peer reviewed and validated. This will ensure that future progress has a solid foundation and that we foster innovation.

WHY DO WE HAVE AN OBLIGATION AS CITIZENS OF OUR SOCIETY TO UNDERSTAND THE SCIENCE BEHIND ISSUES THAT IMPACT US EVERY DAY? Our obligation stems from our desire to satisfy our basic needs and live life to the best standard that we can. Water filtration systems were invented to provide access to clean water. This invention was made possible because of critical thinking as to how we could solve the practical, common problem of locating a clean water source. Recently, sustainability science has emerged as a concentrated effort to find a way to reasonably use natural resources. This topic of natural science is analyzing how to responsibly preserve the continued use of natural resources and the survival of life for generations to come. By understanding how science has shaped our world, we begin to enable informed debate and make informed decisions about issues we all face.
