Structure of a scientific report
Purpose: •
Inform other people about you topic and experiments o To do this well, communicate succinctly – so another scientist can follow and change if needed o A way of cumin coating between scientists
Hourglass: Introduction (Broad): Setting the scene and giving a broad context for the experiment then describing the reasoning for what you did Discussion(Broad)w: Interpretation of your results and placing them in the broad context of your field of research •
•
• •
Good to write a framework before writing the real report to help guide you o Try to write for your reader and not yourself while maintaining consistency in structure ▪ Can use subheadings to help flow • Never use “as mentioned above” Don’t assume your reader knows everything and make sure you explain
Searching for scientific literature (see video on Canvas) Primary research sources o Better to use a review paper
▪
Review paper – Does not record any one particular experiment but rather compiles many papers in the one field and gives a larger paper o Use some of the citations other research papers use in order to extend yourself
Extracting key ideas/concepts from the scientific literature • •
Find key words that you want to use in your report and use those key words to find papers Better to use a mind map to construct an idea
Referencing •
Harvard o Number [1],[2],…. At the end of each sentence which links to the reference list OR o Author,Year after each sentence
Visually communicating your data (e.g. graphing) Include: • • • •
Make sure the correct units are being used Use axis titles Standard Error Bars No title
Statistics • •
T-test o P > 0.05 o P < 0.05 D.f...
