INTRODUCTION TO ORGANIZATION

INTRODUCTION TO ACC ACC Limited (Formerly the Associated Cement Companies Limited) is one of the largest producers of cement in India. It is a subsidiary of LafargeHolcim. On 1 September 2006, the name of The Associated Cement Companies Limited was changed to ACC Limited. ACC Limited had been established in Mumbai, Maharashtra on 1 August 1936.

HISTORY OF ACC In 1936, eleven cement companies belonging to Tatas, Khataus, Killick Nixon and F E Dinshaw groups merged to form a single entity, The Associated Cement Companies. Sir Now roji B Saklatvala was the first chairman of ACC. The first board of directors had some prominent industrialists—J R D Tata, Ambalal Sarabhai, Walchand Hirachand, Dharamsey Khatau, Sir Akbar Hyderi, Nawab Salar Jung Bahadur and Sir Homy Mody. The list of companies that were merged:[6] The Indian Cement Co. Ltd., The Katni Cement and Industrial Co. Ltd., Budhi Portland Cement Ltd, The Okha Cement Co. Ltd. The Gwalior Cement Company Ltd., The Punjab Portland Cement, The United Cement Co. Ltd., The Shahabad Cement Co. Ltd., The Coimbatore Cement, The Dewarkhand Cement Co. Ltd., The C. P. Cement Co. Ltd. The Gagal Cement Works of ACC Limited at Barmana, Himachal Pradesh. The management control of company was taken over by Swiss cement major Holcim (now LafargeHolcim) in 2004. ACC operated as subsidiary of Lafarge Holcim. On 1 September 2006, the name of The Associated Cement Companies Limited was changed to ACC Limited. The company is the only cement company to get Super brand status in India. ACC Limited (ACC) is a leading player in the Indian building materials space, with a panIndia manufacturing and marketing presence. With 17 cement manufacturing units, over 90 ready mix concrete plants, over 6,600 talented employees, a vast distribution network of 50,000+ dealers & retailers and a countrywide spread of sales offices, it contributes tremendously to the landscape of the country.

For over 80 years, ACC has been synonymous with cement, establishing its reputation as a pioneer organisation that consistently sets new benchmarks in research and innovative product development. History was created more than eight decades ago when the doyens of the Indian cement industry unified their operations to build the foundation of a company that has only grown stronger with every passing year. From the Bhakra Nangal Dam in 1960 to the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, ACC cement is at the heart of iconic landmarks across the country. Our success over the years can be attributed to our unrelenting focus on customer centricity, ethical business practices and sustainable development. We pay tribute to our motto of ‘Cementing Relationships’ with every single interaction with our range of stakeholders. ACC’s brand architecture comprises the gold range and silver range of products assuring superior quality for general construction as well as for specialised applications and environments. The ready-mix concrete product range provides one-stop solutions from basic requirements to high grades of concrete to build the country’s tallest structures. Sustainability is an integral part of our business strategy, with our Sustainable Development 2030 Plan focused on four broad themes: Climate, Circular Economy, Water & Nature and People & Communities. Our corporate social responsibility efforts benefit local communities across the country by furthering economic and social progress. ACC’s earliest initiatives in community development date back to the 1940's – long before the term 'corporate social responsibility' was coined. ACC was among the first Indian companies to include commitment to environmental protection as one of its corporate objectives. Since inception, we have integrated this commitment into all activities of our value chain, from mining to sales to promoting the use of alternative fuels and resources, resulting in one of the lowest carbon footprints in the cement industry. In 2005, ACC became part of the Holcim Group of Switzerland. Subsequently, in 2015, Holcim and Lafarge came together in a merger to form LafargeHolcim – the global leader in building materials and solutions. Being a part of this large group has fuelled ACC’s growth and the resultant technology sharing continues to help us stay ahead of the curve in the dynamic Indian market.

The company has been a trendsetter and important benchmark for the cement industry in many areas of cement and concrete technology.

ACC has a unique track record of innovative research, product development and specialized consultancy services. The company's various manufacturing units are backed by a central technology support services centre - the only one of its kind in the Indian cement industry. ACC has rich experience in mining, being the largest user of limestone. As one of the largest cement producers in India, it is also among the biggest customers of the domestic coal industry, of Indian Railways, and a considerable user of the country’s road transport network services for inward and outward movement of materials and products. ACC demonstrates the practices of being a good corporate citizen undertaking a wide range of activities to improve the living conditions of the under-privileged classes living near its factories.

ACC CEMENT PLANT, BARGARH IDCOL (The Industrial corporation of Orissa Ltd.) with the objective of promoting industrial units for the optimum utilization of minerals resources available in the state and mobilize resource for the rapid industrialization of the set up its Hira Cement Work (HCW) as one of its units for manufacturing cement with a capacity of 396000 MT of Portland cement. The plant was located in the revenue villages of Khaliapai, Bargaon, Bardol and Dang in the district of Bargarh over 1,121.67 acres of land. The capital investment of the plant was around 8 Crores. The commercial production commenced from April 1968. Dungri limestone Quarry, initially operating under Orissa Mining Corporation was transferred to HCW as captive mines. The plant which is owned by ACC now is still connected to the Dungri Limestone Quarry through a Meter-Gauge railway line over a distance of 43km for transportation of limestone.

The 1st phase expansion was taken up in 1985 where cement grinding capacity was enhanced to 5.65 lakh ton per annum in terms of Portland Slag Cement (PSC).

MODERNIZATION OF HCW From last two decades there has been a phenomenal growth of Indian cement industry particularly after partial decontrol by the government of India since 1982. The capacity was raised to 130 million tonnes from 29 million tonnes in the year 2000. Due to this it was essential for the companies to go for modernization by adopting the new dry process technology in the place of the existing wet-process to increase the quality of the product. The new plant up to clinkerisation was started in the year 1995 while grinding continued in the wet-process plant. The old plant was operated simultaneously with the new plant till august 1995 was finally closed. The production of new plant continued from 1996. In the year 1993, IDCOL decided to convert HCW to a separate entity in the name of “IDCOL Cement Ltd” (ICL) aiming at tapping the capital market and also to provide an independent Board of directors for better and efficient management of the unit. On 22nd December 2003 as per the decision of the cabinet sub-committee of the government of Orissa, ICL was taken over by The Associated Cement Companies Ltd (ACC). ACC acquired 23.50 Crore of equity shares of rs.10 each from UTI and its associates on 29.03.2004. Therefore, IDCOL Cement Ltd. Become a wholly subsidiary of ACC. Due to the restriction in the use of name “IDCOL” in terms of share purchase agreement, ICL changed the name from “IDCOL CEMENT LTD”. To “BARGARH CEMENT LTD. In 2005 BOD of BCL decided to amalgamate the company with its holding company ACC which would help both the company to grow and develop and will result in better and more productive utilization of the combined resources. All the assets of BCL were transferred and amalgamated with ACC.

COMMITTED TO ENVIRONMENT PROTECTION ACC is among the first Indian companies to include commitment to environmental protection as one of its corporate objectives. Long before pollution control norms and regulatory law came into existence, ACC inducted the use of sophisticated high efficiency pollution control equipment for cement kilns, raw mills, coal mills, power plant and coolers. That was in 1966. Today each ACC factory has high efficiency state of the art pollution control equipment and devices. Each of our manufacturing units has a separate Environment section manned by a qualified environmental engineer and supporting staff. ACC is the industry leader in the urgent race to reduce CO2 emissions. We have established systems and procedures to manage improvements in the control of greenhouse gas and atmospheric emissions. ENERGY EFFICIENCY Energy is a prime concern. We have made significant strides in attaining energy efficiency through our captive power plants and the pursuit of building our capacities in clean renewable energy sources such as wind energy farms. GREENING THE ENVIORNMENT Each of our cement plants has its own success story of tree plantation, greening activities, horticulture, flower and fruit cultivation and water conservation. Tree plantation and green belt development programs have been extended to cover areas in the vicinity of our plants for the benefits of the local community. Afforestation programs in used mines have helped transform the barren and dry ambience into lush greenery. Tree plantation is a regular and committed activity at ACC. Each one, Plant One is a message that inspires our employees. WATER CONSERVATION With an avowed policy to maintain zero water discharge, we continuously seek better ways to manage our water resources efficiently. The water used in plants for industrial cooling is recycled through cooling towers, water ponds and tanks. Our cement plants have converted old abandoned mines into huge reservoirs by collecting rainwater from catchments around mines. As a result, we have several outstanding examples of achievements in water harvesting and in the creation of reservoirs in abandoned mines and quarries. Some of our plants have become near self-reliant in respect of their water requirement for industrial and domestic consumption.

TRANSFORMING AND MANAGING WASTES ACC has achieved spectacular results in the utilization of two hazardous and pollutant industrial wastes – namely slag from steel and fly-ash from thermal power stations – to make blended cements that offer unique advantage to concrete. We were first in the use of waste sludge from the fertilizer industry to make cement. ACC is now actively engaged in the promotion of alternate fuels and raw materials and in co-processing waste materials through effective use of cement kilns. ACCOUNTABILITY We are accountable for providing quality products & excellent services along with meeting the strict requirements of regulatory standards and ethical business practices.

blended cements also help to cut down the emission of carbon dioxide and assist in checking global warming. ACC is sensitive to customer needs. When the company realized that large construction activities would require large amount of cement it set up the country’s first facility for distribution of cement in bulk, as far back as 1956. To meet the needs of other consumers it introduced cement in small 25 kg bags also known as jumbo bags of IMT.
