Description

Applications of the information processing model to education: Sensory Register: - If you don’t pay attention it is as if it never happened Attention is limited - Attention and self-control are limited (like physical strength) - They can be increased with practice and effort - The ability to control yourself and to focus your attention declines when you are stressed, tired, or hungry - Self-control and attention can be restored by reset - There is some evidence it can be restored even better by: - exercise - novelty - yoga/meditation - nature - eating Teaching Implications Derived from the Sensory Register’s Characteristics - Demand attention during instruction and when giving directions - Practice paying attention and controlling attention - Try to chunk lessons into roughly 20 min segments: less for younger students and more for older students - Give brain breaks - Students with ADHD have trouble because they pay too much attention to too many things. They need support, not punishment Learning/Teaching Implications derived from the Working Memory’s Characteristics 1. Limit the “Cognitive Load” - Reduce potential distractions like noises - Give a few instructions at a time - Use anchor charts and other reminders - Choose materials that are simple 2. Chunk Information 3. For youngsters - rehearse (for older students elaborate, organize, and visualize) The Thrilling Three: 1. Elaborate! Do something with it - Self- explanation - Summarize 2. Organize! Put it together - themes/unit (Problem based learning) 3. Visualize! - Imagine it as a picture. The more detailed and the more distinctive that image is the easier it will be to remember

Learning/Teaching Implications Derived from Long-Term Memory Characteristics - Make connections Text - Self Text - Text Text - World - Make information as meaningful as possible - avoid rote memorizing - Recognition is easier than recall What if the information is Meaningless? Mnemonics - Adding meaning to the meaningless - Turn to your neighbors (s) - Pick one of the following and share how you memorized that set of facts when you were in school - Times tables - The planets - The states - The element symbols...
