Description

Chapter 5- (Scope Management) Case Study 5.4, Classic Case: London’s Millennium Dome 1) What does the story of the Millennium Dome suggest about the importance of considering both technical and commercial performance for project success?  Its exhibits to us that success always meets preparation and that the each component is needed for the project to be successful.  For example when the Dome was dome was completed they had the commercial site of it completed ready to make a profit form ticket sales but they didn’t have the technical part of the project finished they still had to extend London underground to accommodate visitors via the Greenwich area and when the the station was finished disabled people couldn’t access it cause there was no place for them.  In order for the project to be successful you need the both the technical and the commercial side of the project working along each when this happens that is when a project is deemed to be successful. 2) In 1998, the then UK Prime Minister Tony Blair said that the Dome would be a beacon of the world. In the light of this comment, why was the Millennium Experience a comparative failure?  The Millennium Experience was a comparative failure because in 1998 there was pressure on the project budget a scope change which was 14 months before it opened.  It was insolvent in February 2000. Extension delayed by 14 months this important and needed to accommodate the sufficient visitors in the Greenwich area  People perceived it as UK history project but in reality it was a modernist thematic and “politically correct”  People queued unnecessarily in the cold weather because of ticketing issues 3) AEG as a commercial company managed to visualize the future of the Dome in a way that no politician could conceive. Do you agree or disagree with this view? Why?  Yes I do agree with the opinion that the AEG company manged to visualise the future of the dome in way no politician could conceive because one point they had plans to establish a casino in part of the dome.  Government ministers community groups and business leaders fought over the project and what to do with the Dome after the project  In 1999 AEG announced its ambitious plans to create multipurpose entertainment centre this would host music concerts, spectacular events from Disney US and National Basketball

Association games whilst the dome would still remain the heart complex with a 20,000seat stadium....
