Description

HAMLET It’s Shakespeare’s most famous tragedy. It was written around 1600-1601 SETTING Denmark. Hamlet is set in Denmark At Elsinore in the 13th century. Most of the actions takplace at the castle of Elsinore. SOURCES Hamlet is inspired by a revenge story which dates back to the Middle Ages in Northern Europe, and another play by the Reinassace dramatist Thomad Kid, who introduced elements of the Senecan tradition ( the Ghost). Hamlet is much more than a revenge story. Shakespeare turned Hamlet into a play of philosophical density appearance. MAIN CHARACTERS Hamlet ( prince of Denmark), Hamlet’s father ( king of Denmark)- the Ghost, Gertrude-Hamlet’s mother ( Queen of Denmark), Claudius ( Hamlet’s uncle) Polonius ( the king’s counsellor), Ophelia ( Polonius’s daughter), Laertes ( Ophelia’s brother), Horace ( Hamlet’s best friend). PLOT The king of Denmark dies suddenly. Queen Gertrude, his wife, marries Claudius, the king’s brother and becomes king. A night, his father’s ghost meets Hamlet, and tells him that he was murdered by Claudius. The Ghost asks Hamlet to revenge his death. Hamlet, to prove the murder, asks a group of actors to perform a play «The Murder of Gonzago» in front of Claudius, which dealt with a similar fratricide.(play within the play) When Claudius sees the murder scene, has a reaction and leaves the performance,so Hamlet realizes that his uncle Claudius is guilty. Hamlet accuses his mother of betrayal, having married Claudius. He hears a noise behind the curtain in his mother’s room, and kills Polonius, thinking he is Claudius Claudius is troubled by Hamlet’s behaviour, and sends him to England to have him executed there, but he escapes and returns back to Denmark. During Hamlet’s absence, Ophelia has driven mad by her father’s death and drowns herself. Laertes decides to avenge his father and his sister’s deaths. Claudius arranges a duel between Laertes and Hamlet, but he gives Laertes a poisoned sword; moreover, he prepares a poisoned drink in case of Hamlet’s victory. Unfortunately, the plan fails.. Laertes and Hamlet are wounded by the same sword, and Gertrude drinks the poisoned drink and dies. Laerte falls and denounces Claudius who is stabbed by Hamlet before dying. Fortinbras, prince of Norway takes possession of the Kingdom and gives military honours to Hamlet THE COMPLEX FIGURE OF HAMLET Hamlet is one of the first truly modern character in literature. He represents the Renaissance tragic hero. The Renaissance has questioned the medieval world-view and discarded the system of beliefs Hamlet is alone, without any moral or religious centainty. He has full self- consciousness He is free to decide for himself. Unlike the traditional hero,Hamlet shows courage, nobility, but also weakness, doubt, reflection THEMES

The Tragedy of Hamlet is not only a common tragedy of power, ambition and revenge Shakespeare explores: the complex nature of human beings, Life and Death, The relationship between appearance and reality,In this tragedy nothing is like it seems to be; the performance of « The Murder of Gonzago» reveals the truth ( Claudius is guilty) OTHER MOTIFS Madness: Hamlet pretends to be mad to carry out his plan more easily; while Ophelia goes mad because of her pain for her father’s death. Evil and corruption are symbolized by poison, which contaminates human nature and society. At the end, everybody dies, in this way the decadence within the Kingdom is destroyed and the previous order can be restored Justice an honour triumph with Fortinbras, who ascends the throne after having given military honours to Ham let....
