Description

1. Describe your overall experience locating these primary sources. Was it challenging or straightforward? Do you learn anything interesting along the way? The overall experience locating the primary sources was pretty straightforward. When I used the appropriate search words the documents I was looking for came up right away. I found it interesting when certain key search words were used they would yield no results, so were too vague and would return way too many results and others, the “right” ones would return few to only one result and it would be the result I was looking for. I ran into this issue with 2 simple words ‘Interview’ and ‘petition’ using one over the other made a huge difference, even though both were words in the document itself and part of the main idea I was searching for 2. Were you able to locate an interview with Tom Evans, a close friend of President Truman’s, who interacted with scientists who were trying to reach Truman with their campaign against the use of the atomic bomb? Share your search terms and a link to the primary source. I was unable to locate the Interview with Tom Evans on any of the 3 sites. I changed up using a variety of different key words with Tom Evans in front of most of them. Some results yielded hundreds of results while others yielded nothing at all. A few of them did return results anywhere from 3 -14, which is a more manageable list, however, none of them were what I was looking for. Examples of searches on all 3 sites: i. Tom Evans “atomic bomb” transcript ii. Tom Evans “atomic bomb” oral history iii. Tom Evans Atomic Bomb oral history transcript iv. Tom Evans Interview v. Tom Evans Interview “atomic bomb” vi. Tom Evans campaign against vii. Tom Evans Atomic Bomb – over 250 results viii. Tom Evans Interact with scientist ix. Interview Tom Evans 3. Were you able to locate a petition against the use of the atomic bomb circulated by Leo Szilard directed toward President Truman? Share your search terms and a link to the primary source. The search for Leo Szilard petition was an easy one. I only searched once and the key search words I used returned the result I was looking for. I found this one on the Atomic Heritage Foundation site by entering into the search: Szilard petition "atomic bomb" (https://www.atomicheritage.org/keydocuments/szilard-petition). 4. Were you able to locate an interview with Lilli Hornig, a scientist who signed Szilard’s petition against the use of the atomic bomb? Share your search terms and a link to the primary source. The search for the Lilli Horning interview was an easy find using the correct key words. I found the result on two of the websites, Voices of the Manhattan Project & Atomic Heritage Foundation. The link found on the Voices of the Manhattan Project site credits the story from the Atomic Heritage Foundation site. The key words I used on both sites that returned the results I needed was: Lilli Horning petition “atomic bomb”. I found it interesting when I entered the search in different ways all using the key search word of Interview in combination with Lilli Hornig, petition, atomic bomb, Szilard – I returned no results at all.
