ART HIST 101 Fra Angelico’s vs. Robert Campin The Annunciation One of the biggest differences of each painting are the tones given from the color of the art. Angelico’s Annunciation uses pastel colors to create an ethereal, spiritually enlightened tone to his piece. Compared to Campin’s darker, contrasting colors to give emphasis. These colors are used as a unifying element in all three pictures of the altarpiece. Robert uses bright colors such as red and teal blue to contrast the brown monotone background. Angelico’s painting uses over-sized figures to make them stand out and give them more emphasis as heavenly figures set in a ethereal realm. Campin portrays a more realistic realm where his figures are placed in a worldly setting. I believe that Angelico wanted to make this annunciation a special momentous piece that pays homage to Christ's coming. Campin wants to stay true to the story where the angel Gabriel visits Mary at her home. His figures are more proportionate to the scale of each room that the characters are set in. Fra’s characters have an almond shaped heads which eludes to the Byzantine art ethereal tone. And they are very two dimensional, almost composite, but they do have 3D depth. Robert uses a similar idea but his characters are three dimensional because they are positioned in different gestures and movements. Angelico’s story is solely based on the Annunciation of Christ, while Campin’s is the entire story of the annunciation, and then going to tell Joseph based on the writings of St. Augustine. Campin uses more middle ages, renaissance techniques in his oil painting compared to the roman and greek techniques of fresco in Angelicos. In Angelico’s painting there is no vanishing point that eludes your eye to one place. You move across the linear plane to read the story. In Campin’s there is a linear perspective, but the vanishing points are in the center of the room causing you to look at each section directly and separately....
