1. College life is accompanied by different values, social norms, and traditions than any other subculture. Common negative behavior norms include binge drinking, experimenting with drugs, and skipping class. I have noticed that these are more common amongst freshman because for many freshmen, college is the first time they are living away from home with so much freedom. This leads students to become overwhelmed with the freedom and feel the need to 'embrace' this and 'live the college experience'. I have noticed that many of the students' norms of behavior are of negative connotations. So far in my college experience, I have noticed that many of my peers do not view the 'college experience' as a time to take advantage of positive opportunities, but rather as a time to take advantage of the freedom from their parents. Some of the cultural values of college students are friends, money, and education. Some traditions, particularly at The University of Akron, are sitting in Buchtel Commons, meeting new friends, getting involved on campus in various organizations, decorating for homecoming week, and attending sporting events. 2. These values and norms related to the social construction of reality because they shape the way college students present ourselves. When almost anyone thinks of college student and the 'college experience' they think of the stereotypical sorority girl, going to frat parties, day drinking, and doing everything except what mostly goes on in college. This is because our society and culture have created this stereotypical image of college life and therefore creating this "reality" of how college is. Our culture has built up this 'reality' presented by generation after generation of upholding these images and has thus socially created college life to be one big party....
