Social Norms Assignment 1. A situation where a person’s system 1 “fast” thinking (and their subsequent attitudes and behaviors) are anchored by an existing social norm would be a situation where a person of color gets pulled over by a police officer for a broke taillight. Our system 1 thinking would cause that person to assume that they probably won’t make it out of that situation alive and in good shape. This is due to the underlying negative stereotypes surrounded police officers, African Americans and police brutality. With this being in mind, the person getting pulled over is more likely to react afraid/feel threatened and it may trigger the police officer to take further action against them. 2. An event in the social environment that could trigger system 2 “slow” thinking to come on board and change that person’s attitude and behaviors in this scenario could be the incident where the Flint police officer surrendered to Black Lives Matter peaceful protesters and joined them in the march toward combatting police brutality, as well as celebrating the life of George Floyd. With this being in mind while being pulled over by a police officer, you may be a little less likely to feel afraid and to feel that all police officers are bad officers. Helping to combat the stereotypes against law enforcement. This however takes a lot more effort to conclude, which is why we always resort to system 1 thinking.

3. I believe we typically rely on system 1 thinking in scenarios like this because when we are in a state of panic, it is a lot easier to rely heavily on one piece of information or one story when experiencing something like this (anchoring). Another reason would be simply because it serves our bias. It is an easier mental shortcut than actually evaluating and analyzing a situation....
