Social Media Assignment

In my normal life, I often try to give myself days away from social media. I think that while social media is a great way to connect with people it can also be a toxic place if you don’t go into it within the right headspace. However, I kind of cheated this assignment to a certain extent because I dropped social media on a day when I was spending with my best friend. When I am with other people I make a conscious effort to stay off social media anyway. Ever since I realized I would be moving across the country for college I have been trying to live presently in all the moments I have left in high school and with my Ohio friends. This effort, in general, has changed my thoughts in a lot of ways. Stepping back from social media has given me more clarity and joy and allowed me to pay more attention to my surrounding. When I am not looking down at my phone I have more time to look around at the trees and sky and birds; granted right now the sky is gray, the birds are quiet, and the trees don’t have leaves, but the absence of these things can be shifted into the hope that things will return to normal soon. Although, when I first started this exercise I did not feel like this at all. I would start reading and realize I don’t have a long enough attention span to enjoy my book. I would grow so bored and restless that I would often quit and go back to my phone. I tried art sometimes--and failed and went back to my phone. I’d play with my dog--and get bored and look at my phone. I’d take naps which is always nice but not productive. Finally, I started going on walks around my house and the neighborhood, riding horses, going swimming/fishing in our pond, and really just finding a home in nature. I know I have a huge amount of privilege to basically live at a summer camp so I have to admit this challenge is a lot easier for me but in any case, I think unplugging is a great way to clear your mind and live freer. Needless to say, now, being without my phone makes me a much happier and more positive person and I do plan on continuing this challenge in the future....
