Sociology Education Cultural and Material Deprivation Key things to remember in this module: Cultural deprivation – attitudes, values, language and intellect of the child and how these factors can impact the child’s education Material deprivation – housing, diet and health, resources: the things in a child’s life that can be helped and supported with money. Examples: Cultural deprivation: - If a child is from a middle-class background where the parent/s read to their children, they will gain better knowledge and understanding. This links into the cultural capital theory of Bourdieu. Similarly, they will gain more of an elaborated code while lower class children may have parents who work more unstructured hours and therefore, the child may develop their speech later on and remain speaking in a more restricted code (Bernstein). Material deprivation: - A child who consumes too much sugar may become uncontrollable and lack concentration within the learning environment. - A child who lives in a smaller home with a lower-class family may struggle to concentrate at home because of the noise of the other people within the home....
