Professor at Indiana University and humble avid bee keeper, Ross Gay, in his short memoir, “Some Thoughts on Mercy,” formulates the idea that racial profiling, or racial bias, effects not only his life, but a large number of American citizens which provides an overwhelmingly large disadvantage. Gay develops the foundation of his argument by emphasizing the cause and effect relationships, he has experienced throughout his life, between how individuals see each other while contrasting the reality of who the individuals are, formulating abstract definitions of racial concepts, and demonizing large corporations, mainstream media, and society as a whole for reinforcing the presence of racial bias. The author’s purpose is to inform the reader about his individual personality and experiences shared by his peers to combat the racial bias, a vicious, societal unbroken cycle, they would most likely receive due to the stigmas and stereotypes the world has prejudged. The intended audience of Gay’s personal memoir is likely all members of society that accept without question general classifications of specific groups of individuals, his objective being to rationalize their preconceived thoughts to make life a little fairer. Even though the author’s intended audience is a broad populace, he uses specific rhetorical techniques to convince the reader the importance of the almost invisible problem himself and others of his community face, in relation to racial bias. The memoir’s intention of removing social stigma and racial bias is transparent through the use of an objective and merciful tone. The author achieves the overall feel of their memoir by arranging arguments leading the reader to ask themselves important questions, creating definitions to bring out the urgency and clarity of the harmful cycle that infiltrates daily life, and mobilizing precise word choice to influence the reader. Therefore, aspires to interact with his audience in a way where the truth of personal and community stories brings to light what the world is truly resembling....
