Faith Morrison Professor Craig Centrie UB Seminar 9/1/2019 Academic dishonesty is a very heavy and serious topic in the academic environment. The act of academic dishonesty can be achieved in such a multifarious amount of ways. All of the articles published by the UB website, American Historical Association and the Organization of American historians all show just how much negative effects academic dishonesty can have on a student as well as all the different types. In this short essay I will be highlighting all of the important points that can be found in all three of these articles. As I was reviewing an article found on the UB website I learned a lot about the importance of not taking part in academic dishonesty as well as the consequences of it. In no way shape or form does UB condone any type of academic dishonesty. In the article there are a list of ways people can partake in this. Some things listed that accounts as academic dishonesty is cheating, plagiarism, misrepresenting documents, purchasing academic material etc. The article goes on to reveal the three steps after someone has been caught being at fault to academic dishonesty. The first step is that the teacher or instructor will inform the student that they have been caught but must be within ten days of the student committing the act. Within this step if the situation was just a misunderstanding this is the time when the student will bring this to their attention and explain themselves. If the instructor believes that this was really just a misunderstanding the student will be let go, if not the second step will be taken. The second step is that the instructor will provide a punishment based on the severity of the act. Some of these consequences can include warning, revision of work, reduction of grade, failure of the course etc.

The third step is that the student will be informed about there punishment and therefore will go through with it peacefully. Moving on to the second article published by the American Historical Association, this article focused more on plagiarism and the many ways it can happen along with consequences. The article first starts off by explaining that plagiarism is the act of using other people’s material and not citing any sources and therefore claiming it as your own. The article talks about how so many students simply switch only certain words around and claim that these are their own words but this is still a form of plagiarism if the original writer was not cited. If a student even summarizes or reword a text the original writer still must be cited or given some type of credit. Reading more into the article it starts to talk about the difference between plagiarism and copyright infringement. Plagiarism is simply using the words of another writer who didn’t write the article recently, while copyright infringement is when someone takes the words of a more recent article where the copyright is still in effect. Lastly, moving on to the article posted by the organization of American Historians, there wasn’t really a lot of information talking about academic dishonesty. However there was a “statement of plagiarism” which stated “ Honesty and integrity should undergird the work of all historians. Historians seek truth about the past in an effort to better understand historical developments and how they relate to the present and future.” The article just talks about one being honest with the work they put their name on without talking about any type of punishment if dishonesty was to take place.. Now the question is have these organizations kept up with a rapidly evolving digital world? Now, since there are three different texts we will address each text separately. First up is the UB guidelines on academic integrity. The UB guidelines are definitely up to date with an

evolving digital world simply because all of the different ways listed that academic dishonesty can be achieved including things that had to do with modern day technology. The second article published by American Historical Association, is updated as well because of all of the different ways of plagiarism listed and the part of the article that explained the difference between plagiarism and copyright infringement that are usually mixed up by people in modern day. And lastly the article published but the Organization of American historians is not really as updated with a rapidly evolving digital world because all that was talked about in this article was basically trust between the teacher and the student. In modern day trust in the classroom will get not get the students nor the teacher nowhere.
