While mingling with friends at a party, you mention a recent promotion that has placed you in charge of evaluating bids for a large computer hardware contract. A few days later, you and your significant other receive an invitation to dinner at the home of a couple you know slightly who were also at the party. Over cocktails, the conversation turns to the contract you’re managing. Your host seems remarkably well-informed about the bidding process and likely bidders. You volunteer information about the potential value of the contract and briefly outline the criteria your firm will use to select the winner. At the end of the evening, he surprises you when he reveals that he is a consultant currently working for several of the companies active in this market. Later that night your mind is racing. Did you reveal the information that can provide one of the suppliers with competitive advantage? -Yes, it is when I volunteered information about the potential value of the contract and briefly outline the criteria that will use to select the winner. And with such information that I informed to the consultant, he can tell everyone in the several companies he working on that are active in this market about this information. And if that happens, all of the companies he is working to are going to formulate ideas that will satisfy the criteria and has the higher chance of winning. What are the potential business risks and ethical issues that this situation raises? -When he will spill out the information to the companies where he is working, there is a possibility that in the bidding time, they were the first one to bid and maybe the host will wonder or confuse why these companies feels like they know about the

criteria. On the other hand, I’m not told to say about the criteria to anyone in the first place, but with that action, I just have an unethical leadership wherein it looks like I accepted something from them in exchange with that information. Though, I accepted nothing but in the perspective of others, they would say that I accept something from them in order for me to talk to them about the potential value of the contract and the criteria.

Should you report the conversation to someone? If so, to whom and what would you say? Yes, knowing the risk that I will get demoted, I will bravely tell it to my boss or to the host. Telling them that I accidentally talk to someone about the contract and criteria so that they can change it before the bidding comes....
