Description

“Gustar” and similar verbs Video #1: Gustar = to like (english); to please (literal meaning) ● Gustar is preceded by an indirect object pronoun indicating the person who is pleased ● Then the verb is followed by a noun indicating the thing or person that pleases. ● Pronouns ○ Yo - me ○ Tú - te ○ él/ella/ud. - les ○ nosotros/as - nos ○ ellos/ellas/uds. - les ● If we want to emphasize who is pleased then we use the preposition “a” followed by a prepositional pronoun or noun: ○ A mí + me ○ A ti + te ○ A él/ella/ud + le ○ A nosotros/as + nos ○ A ellos/ellas/uds + les ● Because the thing or person that pleases is the subject, “gustar” agrees in number and person ○ Ejemplo: Me gustan las frutas. ● Gustar is often used in the conditional to soften a request ○ Example: Me gustaría un refresco, por favor.

Video #2: Las Reglas ● Only two possible verb forms can be used for these verbs: ○ The él/ella/ud. Form is used then the object following the verb is a singular noun or an infinitive verb ○ The ellos/ellas/ustedes form is used when the object following verb is a plural noun. *These verbs must also take an indirect object pronoun (los pronombres de complemento indirecto) in order to identify the person who is involved with the action: (me, te, le, nos, os, les) ●
