Description

Today I shall deal with the notion “Spaces and Exchanges”. I would like to start by giving a brief definition of the topic. The notion of space and exchanges is a broad concept that relates to the movement from one place to another. More specifically an exchange is an act of giving and receiving something else in return. It can also be seen as a continuous movement or circulation. The subject I wish to present will be concentrated on the immigration to the United States of America and the difficulties one has to face. Thus I ask: Does chasing the American Dream come at a cost ? I will start by talking about To begin with, immigration is the action of coming to live permanently in a foreign country, a legal immigration which i'll be focusing on, demands the existence of official paperwork’s to enter a non-native country. Immigration isn’t a new phenomenon, people have always immigrated. People immigrated for various reasons, like running away from war or conflicts, some immigrated to flee from poverty or in the hopes of finding a better life with better opportunities for themselves and for their families. Every year people from all around the world choose to leave their country and move to the United States in order to pursue the American Dream. In fact the American Dream is the belief that anyone regardless of where they were born can attain their desired level or form of success by living in the United States. However many sacrifices are going to be required. For one to chase the American Dream, they would need to start by leave their country of origin and move to the US. We studied in class a text called “A new Identity” in which a Panamanian family after moving to American never went back to Panama because the father always feared losing his job, when one day the father was interested in going back to his country for a highschool reunion, the answer he got from one of his old friends infuriated him and made him feel betrayed and even rebuffed by one of his own as his friend judged him for never coming back and accused him of being a show off that didn’t care about his home country. We can learn from this that those who aren’t living in the United States view America as a place to roll in money, which wasn’t the case here as the only reason the father never went back was out of fear from losing his job. By moving to the US one can expect for ties to be broken between our loved ones back home, some will even lose their self of belonging after leaving for a long time. On one hand we have those who lose their self of belonging to their country after moving but on the other hand we have those who keep longing to their homes as they feel incapable of fitting in their new destination.

In fact, many immigrants have a hard time fitting in, even after becoming American citizen, as they struggle for recognition from others. The perception of others makes it a daily struggle to try and fit in or blend in. We studied in class a text called “ Remembering home” in which an Indian student living in the US is being bullied at school for being different, he struggles with the language barrier as he is incapable of well understanding his teachers and is unhappy being in the United States, and he finds himself always longing for home....
