Spirometry Interpretation
Spirometry is a method of assessing lung function by measuring V of air that the PT can expel from their lungs after a maximal inspiration Important for differentiating between obstructive and restrictive airway disorders, and help monitor disease severity Provides important measures including o Forced expiratory volume in 1s (FEV1) = volume exhaled in 1 st s after deep inspiration and forced expiration (similar to PEFR) o Forced vital capacity (FVC) = total volume of air that PT can forcibly exhale in one breath o FEV1/FVC = ratio of FEV1 to FVC expressed as a percentage FEV1 and FVC values are expressed as a % of the predicted normal for a person of the same sex, age and height Reference ranges o FEV1 = >80% predicted o FVC = >80% predicted o FEV1/FVC = >0.7 Confirm PT details = name, age, gender, height, ethnicity Assess quality of results o 3 consistent volume-time curves needed, best two curves should be within 5% of each other o Best of the three consistent readings of FEV1 and FVC for interpretation o Expiratory volume-time graph should be smooth + free from abnormalities caused by coughing or extra-breath during expiration, slow start to forced expiration or sub-maximal effort Obstructive spirometry: o Reduced FEV1 (...
