GRADING POLICY: (I) GRADING CRITERIA: Your final grade will be based on Three Mandatory Multiple-Choice Non-cumulative Tests (including some non-multiple choice questions, if deemed necessary), a

4

Mandatory Comprehensive Online Home-Work (in your Course Black Board Portal), and a Mandatory Multiple-Choice Final Examination. The number of questions in each of the tests and final examination will be 15 to 25. Each of the tests and final exam will be worth 100 score points. Please note that this requirement is fully at the discretion of the instructor. There will be “NO CURVE” on grades. Minor adjustments may be made in the chapter sections/topics / problems / test strategies / grading criteria at the discretion of the instructor, and will be announced in the class, if deemed necessary. Also note the following points about the grading policy. 

NOTE 1: MANDATORY TESTS AND FINAL EXAM: All tests and final exam are mandatory. Anyone who misses any test or final exam will receive an F (0%) for that test or final exam. Anyone who misses the final exam will receive an F for that course. There will be no makeup for any missed tests, or the final exam. These must be taken on due dates. No written or oral excuses will be accepted for this.

NOTE 2: Instructor’s Discretion: It is the discretion of the instructor to drop one of the lowest test scores (but not the final exam score), before averaging for the final course grade, provided a student has not missed any test and the final examination, and if doing so is in favor of the student. In such a case, the final course grades will be calculated by taking the TOTAL of the final examination score, two best test scores, homework, and extra credit points. Please note that this requirement is fully at the discretion of the instructor which will be only decided by the instructor after Test 3. Further, if you miss any test due to accident, traffic ticket, sickness, hospitalization, death in the family, arrest, court date, jury duty, or religious observance, there will be no make-up for the missed test. However, in such a case, a missed test may be considered as the lowest test score and apply the above-said rule, which is the discretion of the instructor. Please note that dropping of one of the lowest test scores on the above ground will be allowed for only one of the lowest test scores during the entire semester.

NOTE 4: Reinforcement Points for completing all Connect Math Assignments and submitting your Connect Math Grade Book Report (with your name printed on it) positively by Monday, April 22, 2019, to your instructor (Dr. M. Shakil). Late Submission will not be accepted. Total Connect Math Grade Points: 10 DIRECTIONS: ANSWER ALL CHAPTER CONNECT MATH MULTIPLE-CHOICE ASSIGNMENT QUESTIONS ONLINE https://www.connectmath.com. YOU MUST COMPLETE CONNECT MATH ASSIGNMENTS BY THE ABOVE DEADLINE. No written or oral excuses will be accepted for this. Please note that, in the interest of the whole class, the points earned in the "Reinforcement Points for completing all Connect Math Assignments and submitting your Connect Math Grade Book Report positively by Monday, April 22, 2019 to your instructor (Dr. M. Shakil)" will be added to the total of final examination score as per syllabus, before assigning the final course grade. The final grades will be determined using the average and the grading scale as per syllabus. Please note that your Connect Math Gradebook will be regularly monitored by your Instructor, Dr. M. Shakil. No written or oral excuses will be accepted for this.

NOTE 5: All grades (except the final exam grade) will be recorded and posted in BLACKBOARD regularly. The students are advised to keep track of their grades regularly, and report to the instructor for any omission or discrepancy.

(II) SUGGESTIONS FOR TEXTBOOK AND CONNECT MATH HOMEWORK (Not Required for Grading): (a) Usually the odd-numbered problems at the end of each section and all of the chapter reviews are suggested for the homework problems and assignments. You are also advised to practice

5

your homework assigned in Connect Math (which is optional if you can afford to purchase it; however, please see the Note 4 above.).This will increase your speed, accuracy, confidence, and understanding of doing the problems and the directions on the tests. It is strongly suggested that you should do all the homework assigned. This will also help you in memorizing the formulas and understanding of the concepts, which are very important for any math course. The Textbook or Connect Math Homework will not be graded (except the Homework provided in your Course Blackboard Portal). Some Supplementary H/W may also be assigned in the class. The students are strongly advised and highly recommended to see their course instructor during office-hours for any help and advisement in their home-work and course materials. Please also see the Appendix given at the end of the Syllabus, regarding the “Completion of Minimum 20 Hours Study Time” at the Hialeah Campus Math Lab, including completing your Connect Math Assignments, Textbook Homework, and Blackboard Homework” to earn your 10 Extra Credit Points. (b) You may also visit the Academic Support Center (Room 1410) / Math Study Room at Hialeah Campus for additional help. The Math Lab at MDC (Hialeah Campus) is an open lab for currently enrolled mathematics students. There are tutors, videotapes, and software available to assist students. (III) EVALUATION AND GRADING SCALE: Your final grades will be calculated out of a total of 400 points, by taking the TOTAL of the final examination score (100 points), homework (100 points), two best test scores (200 points), and extra credit points. “Each of the two best tests, homework and final exam will have equal weight.” If any student misses the final examination, a zero will be awarded for the missed final examination and the grade earned by the student will be an “F.” The following scale will be used for the calculation of final grade. “Minor adjustments may be made at the discretion of the instructor.” GRADE GRADING SCALE (Note: Here x represents the total of the final examination score, homework, and the test scores, including any extra credit points earned.) A 360  x  400 B 320  x < 360 C 280  x < 320 D 240  x < 280 F Below 240

(IV) NOTICE ABOUT TEST DATES: Please see the Lecture-Schedule below. It is the responsibility of the students to keep track of the syllabus, classroom discussions, and tests and final exam scheduled dates, and, in case of schedule conflict with other courses or commitments, you are advised to rectify it as soon as possible by going to the Registrar’s office. However, you will have at least one class notice of an upcoming test. All tests and final exam are mandatory. There will be no makeup test in any circumstances. A zero will be awarded for any missed test. No written or oral excuses will be accepted for this. (V) CHEATING ETC. IN THE EXAMINATION: A “Zero, or award of an “F” in the course, or “expulsion from the college,” etc. will be given in the test for cheating in any form, including plagiarism, taking help or copying from other students, or giving help to the other students during the tests or final exam. If any student is caught cheating during the examination, his / her name will be duly noted by the instructor and reported to the concerned authorities for further action (namely, to award of an “F” in the course, expulsion from the college, etc.). For details please see the Students’ Hand-Book. No written or oral excuses will be accepted for this.

Excused or Unexcused absences for more than four class es during the entire semester are considered excessive. The names of such absentees may be dropped or withdrawn from the class roll at the discretion the instructor without any notice as per rules and regulations stipulated by the college. Once the name of a student is dropped from the class roll by the instructor, it cannot be reinstated in any circumstance. Moreover, it is the discretion of the instructor to award an “F” due to excessive absences, unsatisfactory progress, indiscipline, misconduct, misbehavior, or any disruptive behavior in the class. In case of any conflict of time and interest with your jobs, other courses, job interviews, travel plans, social engagements, family problems, etc., you are advised to make alternative arrangements to attend your class without missing it. No written or oral excuses will be accepted. (b) IMPORTANT: Using the Attendance Policy Guidelines (see below), Tardiness is permitted on test days without penalty, although you will have less time on the test than everyone else. On test days, if you are so late that someone has already turned in their test before you arrive, you will not be allowed to take the test and a zero will be given for the respective test. No written or oral excuses will be accepted for this.
