Slide 1- Introduction to Matthew Gaeta Slide 2 – Current job of Matthew Gaeta: Matthew Gaeta is the CEO and Founder of Gaeta Sports Management. He is a Major League Baseball Players Association Certified Agent (MBLPA). Mr. Gaeta has grown his business in just 4 years, and represents more than 75 professional baseball players in professional baseball. Matthew Gaeta is one of the youngest professionals to be certified as an MLBPA agent. He was certified at just age 21. His experience as a player, as well as his academic background and business networking acumen have led to his success. (About the Founder, 2016) He has a BS in Sports Management and is currently pursuing his law degree. (New Voices Under 30, 2020) Slide 3 – Job Responsibilities of Matthew Gaeta: As a sports agent and player representative, Matthew Gaeta would assist professional athletes in negotiations by providing advice about contracts, endorsements, public appearances, financial investments, taxes, and salary. A player agent or representative might have a single player they represent, or they may represent many players, depending on the size of their firm. A player agent should be an energetic and enterprising person, with strong organizational skills. The agent should have an outgoing personality, and should be able to interact well with other people on a personal and professional level. (Sports Agents, 2021) Slide 4 – Industry Growth for Player Agents: As social media and internet advertisement grows, so does the market for athletes to endorse products. These endorsements range from watches to cars to food and beyond. Athletes rely on their agents to not only secure these endorsements, but to secure the most lucrative contract that is in their best interests. Additionally, the world market has opened up for players in all countries to play professionally in other parts of the world. It is more important than ever for a player to have an agent who understands the cosmopolitan aspect of business. Industry in sports management has never enjoyed such an upward trend in terms of growth. Additionally, growth in websites and television providers has created more opportunity for sports to be watched in general, and hence more opportunities for new sports, and more endorsements. (Nagel, 2015) Slide 5 – Trends in the Sports Agent Industry: According to Matthew Gaeta, the sports industry needs to do a better job of “showcasing athletes and industry professionals that have unique backgrounds and inspirational stories”. In doing so, his idea is to inspire new and younger talented people to work in sports business. This is because the trend in the industry is upward, with sports viewing and attendance remaining steady, and increasing in some markets. There is a continued increase in the industry expected, despite Covid concerns, as vaccines are implemented. It is expected that as the Covid restrictions are lifted, trends toward increased sporting attendance and interest will grow. This creates more opportunity for those athletes who have had career delays due to Covid, to start their careers now. This will create a larger influx of newer and younger athletes looking to secure contracts and acquire representation. Slide 6 – Personal Strengths and Weaknesses: In a previous course I took in leadership, I got to take a number of assessments which identified numerous strengths and weaknesses for me. I was strongest on people related skills, including being outgoing and extraverted. I scored in the moderate range in terms of organizational skills. I learned from doing this assignment that if I

were to be a sports agent, which I might be interested in, I would need to really hone my organizational skills. I already have the big personality and strong people skills, but in order to manage a business and multiple aspects of client accounts, I would need to develop my organizational skills. Also, I still need to learn a significant amount about contracts, taxes, and financial management. I learned that a sports agent should be enterprising and energetic, and I think I have both of those as strengths. I like to learn new things and meet new people, and I am good at figuring things out.
