Description

1. In 2 to 3 sentences, describe the main plot of the movie, the main characters, and the setting. I have chosen the movie called Devil Wears Prada. In this movie, Andrea—a college graduate student, luckily being chosen to be a personal assistant for the famous editor-in-chief of Runway magazine—Miranda. Trying to integrate into the workplace, Andrea starts to change her clothing style, lifestyle and her physical appearance in order to get Miranda’s acceptance. These changes quickly break Andrea’s friendship with the besties before she accept the work and cause conflict between she and her boyfriend. As the more effort Andrea put into the job, she feels she won’t like the rhythm working for Miranda and finally quit her job. 2. Applying information from your lesson or text, describe examples of stressors in the film. How were these similar to or different from some of the antecedents to strain or stressors mentioned in the lesson? In this film, some obviously stressors are the task-related stressors and the career-related stressors. The task-related stressors are stress created from the task like feeling there is too much to do in too little time, interruptions, monotony, etc. (Psychology applied to work, 2016) in this film, Andrea was given multiple tasks at the same timelike need to buy skirts from CK, need to buy Starbucks for Miranda, also need to deal with the phone calls at the same time. These tasks are too much to be done in a certain amount of time especially sometimes Miranda will interrupt one task and jump to another. The career-related stressor is stress related to one’s living including unemployment and layoffs. In this film, Andrea was facesome situation that is acted or fired such as finding unpublished Harry Potter for the twins of Miranda. The stressor in general can affect one’s psychological health while some are one-time event and some are ongoing event. The task-related stressor is usually an ongoing stressor as the event is a continuously process and everyday Andrea needs to deal will it. However, the career-related stressors is usually a one-time event as Andrea will be given a result of leave or stay based on her performance. 3. What types of strain did this lead to (job-related, emotional, physiological)? Describe the specific examples that came up in the movie. These leads to emotion-based strain mostly for Andrea. I remember in the movie, Andrea was making a mistake by being seen in Miranda’s house. After that, she was blamed by Miranda and made Andrea very depressed. She is crying and ask for help from her co-worker after that. While Miranda asked Andrea to find unpublished Harry Potter for her twins, it bought great anxiety San irritability Andrea, as an almost impossible mission and the result of do or quit, the work bought lot of strain to Andrea. Another example will be family problems bought by the emotion-based strain, Andrea almost breaks up with her boyfriend because of the endlessly overtime work and continually miss

important event with her boyfriend. 4. How did the characters in the film deal with their stressors? Did they use effective coping strategies? In the film, Andrea mostly deal with her intelligence and relationship building in the workplace. (Canvas, 2019) When she got a lot of tasks, she can immediately get used to it. After she got familiar with the work, she knows how to use the resource build during the work. For example, when she needs to get the unpublished Harry Potter, she contacted the famous author met earlier and successfully get the book. After that, in a limited amount of time, she bought Miranda her Latte with nonfat milk while made the Harry Potter book copies and covers. She definitely uses the effective coping strategies like the problem-focused coping. (Canvas, 2019) 5. Given what we learned in the lesson, what would you recommend to these characters to either reduce or better cope with the stressors in their lives? Be sure to explicitly refer to something discussed in the lesson or text in your answer. I will recommend Andrea to get social support such as talk to Miranda and ask her to create an environment that the employees are able to communicate with each other and promote their well-being. Andrea can also seek emotional support to help her coping with those strains she needs to face....
