MODULE 6 Learning Activity 2: SCIENCE TECHNOLOGY AND SOCIETY

Name: YANA CHARYL D. BITO Year and Course/Section: I BS BIOLOGY HUMAN FLOURISHING IN PROGRESS AND DE-DEVELOPMENT After watching the documentary The Magician's Twin: C.S. Lewis and the Case against Scientism (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FPeyJvXU68k ) and reflecting on its connection to human flourishing, write an analysis of the documentary by answer the following questions: a. What is scientism? Why was Lewis against it? Answer: Lewis is not anti-science; rather, he is opposed to scientism, which is the notion that

current science is the sole reliable source of information about our surroundings and the world, and that scientists should be the ones to dictate our policy and even our moral values. b. Science was compared science to magic in three ways: as religion, as credulity, and as power. Explain his comparison for each case. Answer: Science and magic, according to Lewis, are twins. The first way that science and magic are fairly similar is their ability to act as a religion.

 

Science as religion- Religion pervades society and has an impact on many aspects of life. Because science has the power to serve as a substitute for religion. Science as credulity- He noticed that when something is claimed in the name of science, people are more likely to believe it. Even though there are no explanations or proofs to support it. He merely wanted to make it clear that before we believe it, we should learn more about it and double-check if it's accurate. Science as power- Science, with its vast and limitless capacities and possibilities, appears mystical to the general public, both in terms of what it can almost uncover and what it can perform. People who are afraid of the unknown surrender to the force of science.

c. Based on what you have learned in the documentary film, what is the presented principle of modernity and its values in the magician’s twin? Answer: The core of modernity is that “nothing is sacrosanct,” and the human person is one of its

consequences. There will be no distinctions made between persons or humans, animals and vegetables, and all other non-human things when modernity arrives.

d. How does scientism threaten the human person thriving in science and technology? Why should science adhere to a moral basis that is not dictated by science itself? Answer:...
