BCOR 1030 Fall 2021 STUDY GUIDE for MIDTERM The midterm includes 50 multiple questions worth two points each. You will have 50 minutes to complete the Exam. The exam is closed-book and will be conducted on-line through Canvas using Proctorio. The exam covers the readings completed to date: From our textbook: Chapters 1, 2, 3 (pages 57-69 only), 5 (pages 100-116 only), 6, 11 (pages 264-274), 12 (pages 284-297 only), and Chapter 14 (pages 325-341 only) Supplemental reading: Cuddy, Duarte pages 63-87, HBR article: The Art of Persuasion, Hartman and Goleman. Please note that the following provides the relevant topics for the various readings. You are responsible for learning all of the information covered in these sections. Chapter 1 • Be able to summarize the six principles of communication. • Be able to describe and explain the principal elements of communication, including the communication process. • Understand the principles of effective communication in professional networks. • Be able to explain credibility and identify the communication skills it embodies. • Know the 6 characteristics of competent communicators. Chapter 2 • Be able to explain culture and co-cultures. • Identify the primary forms of human diversity including: o Race, ethnicity, nationality o Socioeconomic status o Disability status o Sex, gender and sexuality o Religion o Generational identity o Other elements • Be able to explain the major cultural dimensions including: o Individualistic and Collectivistic o Low or high context o Difference in power distance o Difference in uncertainty avoidance o Difference in masculine and feminine • Be able to describe behavioral strategies for adapting to cultural norms and customs. • Be able to illustrate ways of engaging diversity in an ethical manner. • Be able to demonstrate communicating with cultural proficiency.

Chapter 5 pp 100-116 • Be able to illustrate how selection, organization, and interpretation occur during perception. • Be able to explain the reasons why people commit perceptual errors. • Be able to differentiate two common attribution errors: o Self-serving bias o Fundamental attribution error • Be able to explain how the nature of self-concept is partially subjective. • Be able to describe three pathways through which self-concept can shape communicative behavior: o Self-monitoring o Self-fulfilling prophecies o Self- esteem Chapter 6 • Explain the stages of development for high-performing teams. • Know the behaviors of effective teams. • Be able to explain distinct styles of leadership. • Understand functional and dysfunctional approaches to making team decisions. • Recognize when and how to communicate virtually in teams.

Chapter 14 pp 325-341 • Be able to compare and contrast the four styles of delivering a presentation: o Impromptu o Extemporaneous o Scripted o Memorized • Be able to explain how to use visual and vocal cues effectively. • Understand the psychological, physical, and behavioral effects of stage fright. • Be able to describe the strategies for managing public speaking anxiety and using it to a speaker’s advantage.
