Case study on Adnan Syed...

Description

Summary of the case On the 9th of February 1999, Hae Min Lee was found half buried in a shallow grave at Gwynns falls in Leakin Park located in Maryland in the United States of America. One month in advance she has already been suspected to be missing after failing; to pick up her cousin from school and attending her long awaited birthday. Witnesses have claimed that Hae Min Lee was approached by Adnan Syed her ex-boyfriend and asked if she could drive him home on the 13th of January after school at 3.15pm at Woodlawn High school, however some suggested it never occurred. An anonymous call leads police to Adnan Syed after Hae’s present boyfriend and the man who found Hae’s body had been cleared, and through the pinging of Adnan Syed’s phone calls the police matches the location of the telephone tower where Hae was murdered. This evidence accompanied by the witness statement of Jay Wild a friend of Adnan; who claimed that ‘Adnan had told him about his plans of asking Hae for a ride home and then proceeding to murder her’, led to the arrest of Adnan Syed on the 28th of February 1999. With Jay becoming the star witness for Hae’s murder at the original trial which lasted for 6 weeks, Adnan was ruled guilty of all charges of kidnapping and first degree murder resulting in a life sentence plus thirty years on the 25th of February 2000. However Adnan’s Layer Cristina Gutieerez created ‘ a perfected ineffective assistance of counsel argument appeal’ as she did not follow up with Asia McClain a key time witness for Adnan’s defence, even after Asia’s multiple of attempts of reaching out to Adnan and Cristina; Cristina still decided to ignore her. It is also believed that Jay has also met up with the police 3 additional times but each time changing his story, allegedly changing his story with the police to match up cell phone pings to the location, creating suspicions for the correctness of Jay’s witness statement. This was followed up by the failure of introducing fax documents from the telecom company to the trial which disapproves the pinged location as it is inaccurate. With the consequents of these faults the appeal has succeed on the 30th of June 2016 and a retrial awaits....
