Description

Nicholas Nerys Mr. Premisler Assignment 2: Reading Assignment The Disuniting of America By Arthur M. Schlesinger

To start off, this book overlooked many different views. Many people like the author and myself wonder what allows us Americans to be united. What do you think hold us together? All of the different religions, races, and customs that disagree on some aspects and believe in different things manage to live and co-exist with each other here in America.

If you would ask someone in the streets this question, they probably wouldn’t know how to answer it. The main answer to this question is your definition and interpretation of America itself. Growing up, you are trained to learn that America is the gateway to a new beginning for people who want to start over. You learn our national anthem and the Pledge of Allegiance and if you interpret those words, you think America is the best and it is the land of the free and the start of a new beginning. In this book, Schlesinger defined America as forgetting your old loyalties and starting a new beginning. I believe that America was really formed as early as 2 or 3 generations ago in my family. America really started when people like my Nonna (grandma) and Nonno (grandpa) came over from Italy and started their life here in Elmont, in the exact house I am living in now. People from all different countries came over like my Nonna and Nonno and started new lives and passed down their experience and traditions to their kids and down to us. I am so happy the way my family history turned out and I am proud they came to America. Without people like this I wouldn’t be here, and America wouldn’t be here. Our decisions today are impacted by history. Many things in our life are. This can easily relate to “History the Weapon”. One of the major world issues is the use of nuclear weapons and we

worry about it falling in the wrong hands and for the wrong use. In this chapter, the author explains the advancement of weapons and how people used them throughout history. An example of the misuse of weapons was on March 5, 1770. The Boston Massacre also known as the Boston Riot ended up in the death of 5 innocent bystanders. This started a big controversy with the citizens in Boston. At the time, every newspaper in the original thirteen colonies were writing about this. This event was looked at and used as motivation for soldiers to fight and stand up for their country in the American Revolution.

A main advantage we have as Americans today is how we can live our lifestyle the way we want. We can mix our ancestors traditions, with new traditions, and even traditions from other cultures and make it into our own. In other countries, people live by their countries rules and standards. America is the melting pot for everything so we can live by any lifestyle we want. I could stick with my parents traditional Italian and Puerto Rican traditions, or I could even live by Chinese customs, not that I would though. My ancestors, your ancestors, our ancestors wanted to start fresh and do what’s best for their family and their future, so they came to the free land of America. The way we can mix cultures and traditions makes us stronger as a whole in America....
