Chapter 1 Introduction 1.1 Background of the Study Human capital perceived to be the most important asset of the country. Therefore, under nutrition is a great hindrance in achieving economic stability and development of a country. There are several approaches have been developed in the Philippines to address this concern. These include Food Fortification, Supplementary Feeding, and Nutrition education and many others. In 2011, the Food and Nutrition Research Institute of the Department of Science and Technology (FNRI-DOST) conducted a survey on updating of the nutritional status of Filipino children and other population groups. And it is revealed that the 33.6% of children age five to ten years old are stunted (decreased human development). The survey also reported that 7.3% of the children in the same age group are weak. According to the research to the research published by Victoria, et al. in 2008 in the Lancet Journal the under nutrition was strongly associated with shorter adult height less schooling, reduced economic productivity and lower offspring birth weight for woman in Brazil, Guatemala, India, Philippines and South Africa (Supplementary Feeding with Education: Effective against Malnutrition, Published on 04 February 2015). According in a research team of Rai University India (2014), malnutrition is major underlying cause of child morbidity and mortality in low-income settings because they have less access in food production and health facilities.
