CSCI 160: Computer Architecture I

E-mail: [email protected] [email protected] Tests and Grading Policy: Two 1.5-hour tests -of max 50 points- tentatively scheduled on: Test 1: October 7, [make-up at the end of the semester; probably December], Test 2: December 7 will be considered in computing your final grade. Homework/projects will be required and collected every class meeting; unannounced quizzes, and possible in-class participation will account for up to 10% (as a “needed” bonus) of the final grade. The whole material will be divided (by the date of the Test 1) into two parts. The final grade will be assigned according to the sum of the two partial scores (50+50=100(%)), as per Hunter College policy. You will be exempted from a Final Exam. Ask if you have questions. Textbooks: Recommended only: 1) M. Morris Mano, M. Ciletti: Digital Design, ISBN-9780131989245; 2) M. M. Mano, C. Kime: Logic and Computer Design Fundamentals, Prentice Hall, ISBN-13:198926-X. You may be able to use previous or more recent editions of these texts, as we will discuss only some of the material covered herein, some additional one, and I'll post class notes. However you will have to attend all classes to understand the material! Objectives: The course will include topics such as: Binary number representations; Boolean algebras and logic gates. Simplification of Boolean functions. NAND and NOR, and other implementations. Combinational logic. Flip-flops, shifting, counters. This course’s objectives will work towards fulfilling of 1:A, B; 2:B; 3:A, C, D of the Computer Science Department’s learning goals. Other policies: You are expected to ATTEND CLASS REGULARLY and NOT TO COME IN LATE, as you are RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY MATERIAL COVERED, whether in this syllabus or not, or ANNOUNCEMENT MADE DURING ANY OF THE CLASSES. Hunter College regards acts of academic dishonesty (such as plagiarism, cheating on examinations, obtaining unfair advantage, and falsification of records and official documents) as serious offenses against the values of intellectual honesty.
