YOUR NAME 19 May 2018 Lord of the Flies Synthesis Essay Man must have rules in order to control his savage side. William Golding brings out this theme in the novel of Lord of the Flies. In this book he shows that humans can be civilized for only so long when they are detached from civilization. There are many more examples that go along with this theme that show us that society holds everyone together, and without these conditions our ideals, values, and the basics of right and wrong are lost like Divergent and the movie called Man in the Iron Mask. All these three sources fit that theme really well. In the book Lord of The Flies, Golding is trying to prove that man must have rules in order to control his savage side. He is proving that you need rules or else there will be chaos and you need rules to survive. Even if some people do not like them they still must have them. Society and civilization must have rules. People need rules because they can’t go around being savages. Rules are what make the world go around. In this book the rules were broken in so many ways, by most of the characters simply because there was no one to stop them. For example how Ralph said you know those signs say “No shirt, no shoes, no service?” on this island. (Golding 1.53) shows that wearing clothes is society’s most basic rule, so naturally the first thing Ralph does is take his clothes off because there is no one to stop him and have him

follow the rule. One of the most basic and obvious themes is that society holds everyone together, and without these conditions, our ideals, values, and the basics of right and wrong are lost. Without society's rigid rules, anarchy and savagery can come to light. Golding is also showing that morals come directly from our surroundings, and if there is no civilization around us, we will lose these values. The movie Divergent reflects the same theme of not following rules. Beatrice "Tris" the main protagonist broke the rules knowing she was born in the faction Abnegation; she eventually transferred to Dauntless and must face the fact that she is Divergent. When she arrived in her new faction, she opted for a change of name to go by. She decided to use ‘Tris’ as a nickname for Beatrice, hoping for a fresh start in a new faction. Tris hides the fact that she’s a divergent from everyone. “A new place, a new name. I can be remade here” (Divergent) . Tris is helped by Tori that she will delete all the computer records that way no one will be able to find out that she’s a divergent; she couldn’t be in the dauntless group because she was a divergent, but she made sure no one finds out about that. Being a divergent, which are the strongest people, with the most power’s she was supposed to be killed, but instead at the end she was found killing people. Even though ‘Tris” and her fellow partner “Tobias "Four" Eaton” who was a divergent also, broke the rules and tried saving poor people and did everything for a good cause. It still goes along with same theme because they both killed the main leader “Jeanine Matthews” for hacking into the system and saving people. This movie shows how no rules were followed even by the main characters. This movie involved a lot of killing and fighting because clearly there were no rules followed.

Man in the Iron Mask is another movie reflects the same idea. It shows if there are no rules, people go crazy and do anything that is right according to them. This movie shows us the main character, the king “King Louis XIV” breaking rules and making up his own rules but not following any of them. He abandons his twin brother just so he can be the king. “He got killed and I got filled” (Man in the iron Mask). Killing people was just an everyday thing for him, because there was no one to stop him. No one to punish him for all the mistakes he made. No one to make him realize that everything that he did was wrong. He made mistakes every day, killed people every day just because there were ‘no rules’ for him to follow. This shows us how important it is to have rules and have people follow them, because without rules people just would do anything without thinking twice. This shows that without society’s rigid rules, anarchy and savagery will come to light. If there’s no rules, people can still make sure that everything they do is right. Even without rules people should know what’s right and what is wrong. I highly believe that a person makes his rules on his own, either they are for his good or bad, it has nothing to do with ‘society’s rules’ because there’s very few people that actually follow rules now a days. Rules should be followed to avoid chaos in the bad, non-technical sense of the word, anarchy requires rules, because independent individual actions must be coordinated in some way. If there’s no rules being followed this world would be a mess. People would do anything that’s right according to them, just like how these three sources show us the problems caused by not following rules.
