Course Goals: To understand how the cell functions as an entity (organelles, trafficking, cytoplasm, cell division, etc.) and in interaction with other cells (extracellular matrix, cell-cell interactions, roles in tissues, etc.). Content:

Textbook (Ebook) reading supports the lecture material; please read in advance of viewing each lecture recording. All lectures will be asynchronous (prerecorded, links provided on Blackboard).

Textbook:

Required: Essential Cell Biology 5th edition Digital Package, Ebook + Smartwork5; ISBN: 9780393680355 Optional Alternatives: Essential Cell Biology 5th edition, Ebook + Smartwork5 + Loose-leaf; ISBN: 9780393680386. If you already have a copy of the book, Smartwork5 access can be purchased as a standalone from the publisher (https://wwnorton.com).

Equipment:

A computer with reliable internet access that can access Blackboard and Norton's Smartwork5 (https://digital.wwnorton.com/ecb5; see bookstore for further details) will be required for this 100% online class. Please contact ACCC to request a laptop and/or to be assigned a hotspot for the semester if you do not have the required hardware and internet capabilities.

Grading:

Exams: All exams will be synchronous – held at 12:30 pm on class days as described in the schedule below. Exams will be administered via Blackboard, consist of multiple choice questions only, and allow the use of non-human resources only (books, notes, internet, pets, plants, ghosts, etc.). Further information about exam policies can be found in the class FAQ document and/or will be announced during the first week. There are four exams (100 points each) during the semester. There is no final exam. Your lowest exam score will be dropped, yielding a total of 300 possible points (three highest scoring exams, out of 100 points each). This policy provides a safety net for any issues that might come up such as illness, connectivity, etc. As a result of the dropped exam policy, there are no make-up exams. For further details, please see FAQ document. Assignments: Up to 100 points can be earned over the semester via Smartwork5 assignments. Your final grade will reflect the sum of the exam points and assignment points = 400 total possible points. Extra Credit: 5 points total can be earned throughout the semester: 3 points via to-be-announced opportunities and 2 points via asking a scientific question (must be relevant to lecture material) on the online discussion board no later than 12/1/20. (Note: Extra credit is 5 points out of 400, not out of 100.) Grading Written as an Equation: (Exam 1 + Exam 2 + Exam 3 + Exam 4 + Assignments + Extra Credit Lowest Exam Score) / 4 = Your Final Grade on a 100 Point Scale Grading Scale (out of 400 points): A = 352 - 400 B = 300 -...
