Magical Mushrooms, Mischievous Molds PLPPM 2010 — PLPPM 2013* Spring 2019 Prof. Kathie T. Hodge Course Coordinator, Mary E. McKellar Course e-mail: [email protected]

Welcome to Magical Mushrooms, Mischievous Molds! This course is a light but substantive introduction to the world of the FUNGI and their close relatives. Over 14 weeks, we'll explore the role of the FUNGI in the circle of life on Planet Earth, with special attention to how they’ve shaped the course of human history and how they affect our daily lives.

* This Syllabus is for students enrolled in PLPPM 2010 (2cr), as well as those of you in PLPPM 2013 (3cr). * fyi, PLPPM 2013 is a 3 credit course with the same content as PLPPM 2010 plus an additional section of lab that has its own syllabus. Try it—you’ll like it.

Readings We assign readings and videos to supplement the lectures as we go—you’ll find them posted on Blackboard. These Blackboard assignments are required and their content is covered on our exams. OPTIONAL: (For more background, read George Hudler’s book ‘Magical Mushrooms, Mischievous Molds.’ Not required)

Power-up with Clicker points The best way to do well in this class is to show up and engage. Participation accounts for 3% of your grade. Earn participation points by attending and participating in clicker questions in lectures and demo labs (the Final Feast and exam reviews do not count). Attend at least 16 of our 22 lectures and 3 demo labs (that’s just 64% of the course). It’s all-or-nothing: If you attend fewer than 16 lectures/demo labs, you get zero points. Pick one of two options to invest in your participation grade during each lecture. Visit Blackboard to learn how to register your device: 1. Buy a clicker, register it via Blackboard, and use it in each class. OR, 2. Buy a REEF polling subscription for use on your phone, tablet, or laptop: https://pollinghelp.cit.cornell.edu/mobile-web/#students Academic Integrity note: Clicking for an absent friend is a breach of academic integrity for you and for your friend. Please don’t.

The Exams The two Preliminary exams (prelims) in this course are given during regular lecture hours (see provisions for make-ups below) and comprise multiple choice plus short answer questions. The exams attempt to measure your mastery of important facts and concepts, as well as your ability to use what you know to problem-solve in new situations. Each multiple choice question has one right answer among four or five choices. Each short answer question may have several correct answers depending on how you interpret it; get one of the possibilities right for full credit. (For example, if the question asks for three factors that contributed to some great moment in fungal history and there are actually six factors, your answer might differ from your neighbor's but still be correct.) The comprehensive Final Exam is allotted 2.5h during Cornell’s Final Exam Period. Students who arrive late for the Final Exam will not be permitted to enter after 45 min have elapsed. The Final has three parts: • • •

Multiple choice questions on material since the second prelim. About the same number of multiple choice questions on material presented throughout the semester. A crossword puzzle with clues based on material presented over the entire semester. Examples will be posted as final exam time approaches. Students

MMMM Syllabus, Spring 2019 v.1.0

! who despise crossword puzzles may opt to respond by filling in blanks on the clue sheet rather than in the puzzle grid. In such cases, there may be more than one correct answer.! If, after an exam, the teaching staff concludes a question was more confusing or misleading than anticipated, we reserve the right to remove the question from the total for the exam. We may curve the exam grades to account for flaws in the exam’s design. We never curve your grade downward.

Makeup Exams A makeup is available for each Prelim and the Final. Only one makeup is available for each exam. You don’t need any formal excuse to take the makeup exam, but you MUST register ahead of time (generally a week before a Prelim, or by the last day of classes for the Final – we’ll tell you how).

SPORE Assignment (required) SPORE is the Student Participation Outreach & Review Essay, worth 20% of your grade. You’ll write a short, magazine-style article that teaches something about a fungusrelated topic we assign. You’ll receive feedback from a TA to help you improve your work. Your final essay (without identifying info about you) will be reviewed by four classmates, plus a member of the Shroom Squad. More instructions will follow, once the semester is underway. !

Course Grades (PLPPM 2010, 2 cr): Prelim One Prelim Two SPORE Assignment Participation Comprehensive Final Exam

24% 25% 20% 3% 28%

Final grades are calculated on a percentage basis: 98–100 = A+; 93.0–97.9 = A; 90– 92.9 = A-; 88–89.9 = B+; 83–87.9 = B; 80–82.9 = B-; 78–79.9 = C+; 73–77.9 = C; 70–72.9 = C-; 68–69.9 = D+; 63–67.9 = D; 60–62.9 = D- ; below 60% = F. Students taking the class S/U, note that to get a passing grade of S, you must earn a C- or higher. If your score is less than 70% you will receive a grade of U.

Course Grades for PLPPM 2013 (3 cr): Students in PLPPM 2013 (Mushrooms, Molds, and More) undertake all lectures, readings, exams, assignments and demos of PLPPM 2010 described here, in addition to their assigned lab section of 2013. You’ll need to track the Blackboard sites for both courses. [note this forbidden overlap: You cannot receive Cornell credit for enrolling in both PLPPM 2010 and PLPPM 2013—just pick one]. To calculate final grades in PLPPM 2013 (3cr), 66% of the final grade will come from the lecture- and demo-based Prelims, Final exam and SPORE assignment of PLPPM 2010; 34% will come from your lab section of PLPPM 2013.

Disabilities and Special Needs: We’ll try our best to accommodate students with special needs, injuries, crises, and disabilities. It’s important to let us know about them in good time – preferably right at the start of the class. A letter from Cornell’s Student Disability Services is the normal route, but feel free to make an appointment to discuss how we can best support you.

Our Course Materials From an instructor’s perspective, this class is a lot of earnest and original work. So: course materials posted on Blackboard are intellectual property belonging to me, the professor. You may not buy or sell any course materials without my express permission. Such unauthorized behavior is not only unfair, it also constitutes academic misconduct. Speaking of which…

Academic Integrity: We want this to be a warm and comfortable class, in which you learn some freaky stuff. We hope you’ll appall your friends with fungus stories around the dinner table. Please take this class the right way—earnestly and honestly. With grit and integrity. Every student is responsible for understanding Cornell’s Code of Academic Integrity, and the behaviors it covers. We particularly draw your attention to the parts of the Code that address plagiarism, the presentation of someone else’s work as your own. In your SPORE assignment, we expect to find NO copied passages from sources. The essay must be written in your own words, and with the sources of your ideas cited properly. We do check submitted work using plagiarism detection software. Likewise, you must NEVER do a friend a “favor” by bringing their clicker to class for them.

Cornell’s Code of Academic Integrity http://cuinfo.cornell.edu/aic.cfm If you are having trouble, please talk to us rather than decide to cheat. For academic integrity violations, such as plagiarism, cheating, and academic misconduct, the penalty we apply may be greater than the point value of the assignment itself. That is because we consider these violations a betrayal of the principles of education. All students must complete this online plagiarism quiz, and submit the results to our course mailbox: : https://plagiarism.arts.cornell.edu/tutorial/exercises.cfm
