FULL CLASSIFICATION OF RP MONOPHTHONGS AND DIPHTHONGS Adapted from Gimson's system Notes:
1. A part of a label given between brackets can be omitted. 2. 'Pure vowel' or 'monophthong' can be substituted for 'vowel' in Vs 1 to 12. 3. 'Glide' or 'diphthong' can be substituted for 'vowel' in Vs 13 to 20. 4. 'Mid' in V12 refers to the whole area between half-close and half-open positions. 5. 'Unrounded vowel' can be replaced with 'vowel without lip-rounding'. 6. 'Rounded vowel' can be replaced with 'vowel with lip-rounding'. 7. 'Narrow-front/etc.' means narrow 'starting from' a front/etc. position. 'Narrow' means from a central position. 8. 'Front/back-closing' means closing towards a centralised-front/-back position. 9. LENGTH is irrelevant for diphthongs as they are all long vowels. 10. 'Falling' is superfluous if you opt for 'glide' or 'diphthong' instead of 'vowel' (see note 3 above).
