JASMINE TARVESTAD 7/18/18 ASSIGNMENT 2: SOCIAL MEDIA

Although it was rather difficult to find things that were interesting to me for this assignment, I was able to find two links that can be considered unethical and employers may find alarming to the company via Facebook posts. One of the alarming posts are on a DCNF Presents The Facts, https://www.facebook.com/DCNFthefacts/, an article about Strzok Gets Destroyed By House Republicans Over Bias He Claims Not To Have, a post by William Kotz has voguer language about the topic that I feel is unneeded. The articles are intended to spread awareness to the citizens within the United States, they are not intended to raise conflict. If an employer is to look at posts by this individual and comes across this post they may have a bad taste in their mouth about the individual based on the language they are using. Something they should keep in mind is that everything one posts is not always private, people and companies out there will find what is being posted, and this can harm your career choices in the end. The second page that I found information regarding employer issues was CNN, https://www.facebook.com/cnn/, now there were only two issues that stood out to me. One article was Elon Musk apologizes to cave rescuer for ‘pedo’ tweet, although the comment by Peter Ludwig does not stand out as harsh language, it does have some language that should not be shared via Facebook. Along with this, another post that stood out to me was with the article How Polaroid paved the way for social media, an individual, Peter Dyer, posts about the president and uses voguer language in doing so. Although individuals have a right to their posts on social media websites, employers also have the right to search their employees and determine if their posts will harm the company’s business in any way. Post with this kind of language can in fact harm the company when it comes to customers who view the article in a different manner as individuals tend to view individual’s profiles and determine based on the post weather or not to shop at that location.

According to the articles provided there are many reasons that an employer may look into an employee’s social media activity. For starters, when an employee is doing the interview process, the employer may look onto the potential employee’s social media account to determine what that person’s personality is like and how they conduct themselves in a professional manner according to careerbuilder.com. Along with this, according to the article of businessinsider.com, the employer also may look into their employee’s social media accounts in order to determine if the employee is presenting the company in a professional manner. I do believe that this is fair based on the employers standing, the company needs to determine if the applicant is the best fit for the position and the company. Not only can the company determine this by the interview, they must also look deeper into the applicant’s background, due to individuals not presenting themselves in a way they normally would in order to get a job. Companies need to look at this because without further investigation they may hire an individual based solely on the interview and later find that the applicant is not suitable for the job. Stating this, I find that it is using social media to determine if the applicant is suitable benefits the employer because employers generally look for employee’s that will improve the company and promote the company name. Someone who does not promote the company name or improve the company based on the social media standing will have a hard time advancing in the company. With the social media accounts, both LinkedIn and Facebook, I have found that there are both advantages and disadvantages. For started, with LinkedIn, it is a professional database social media account, which is both beneficial for individuals while at the same time it does not present additional information that Facebook has. LinkedIn provides a search engine for jobs that allows applicants to research jobs without leaving the site, however, many local businesses that I have found do not use this social media account as not a lot of applicants and customers have 2

accounts to the LinkedIn social media. On another note, Facebook has a lot of users and many companies benefit from using Facebook to promote their company. However, many social media accounts, including ones on Facebook, can be found unhelpful when promoting the company and products that the company may provide to their customers because individuals have a bias opinion on the company already and this type of social media networking is not considered professional much like the social media network of LinkedIn. A site that I chose the use for this assignment is one that I tend to use regularly, Cricut.com, I enjoy designing products and promoting an at home business part time. Doing so, I have noticed that over the past two years the company Cricut has changed their website not once or twice but three times alone. Even with the company changing the website regularly in order to promote a better customer flow and provide their customers with new information, their contact information and job applications have been the same since I have begun looking into their website. According to the wayback machine on the web.archive.org website, the company has had a webpage since 2005 and started to make drastic changes to the site starting in 2013. I was not surprised with that I have found based on the company’s webpage because I was already aware of some changes that the company had done prior to the research. However, the company does have many social media pages on Facebook that I am currently apart of, these social media accounts, however, only promote creativity and products, they do not promote any job openings which I find rather surprising because the company is actively promoting on social media and generating many responses to each promotion. I cannot say that this research will change my online behavior as I do not post onto any social media accounts regularly and I tend to only post when a major event is to take place or when I feel the need to post and even than it is nothing inappropriate. Normally my posts consist of a picture update or an update in my job status, rather 3

than how I am doing or how I feel. Knowing what I now know and based off of my previous knowledge that I had when it comes to social media postings, I will not change the way I use my social media accounts due to ensuring that my career after graduating college is not harmed in anyway based off of a social media post that I have. I want to be able to advance in my career without jeopardizing my company.
